The only difference I can think of is that the Retriever has a longer coat than the labrador, not much help I know, but hey it's a start!

Re: Whats the difference between...
I had a lab years ago, and have a goldie now.
They are very similar in temperament. friendly, biddable, very good with kids and other animals. I know both are known for intelligence but both are great to train.... but I think with a lab it IS intelligence and with a goldie it is more eagerness to please you.... I find my kate a tad thick!!
But she is great to train because she wants her treats and fuss!!
Goldies are like living with a living breathing teddy bear!! BUT the downside to this is your floor develops golden tumbleweed no matter how much you hoover. but it is dry fluffy hair, it just gets everywhere because of this.
Labs with their shorter hair have a rep for not losing so much.... not true, and it is coarser so weaves its way into furniture and carpets..... and it, and they, tend to be greasy and therefore tend to smell doggy.

In our experience retrievers are a bit more relaxed and labs a bit more excited
