Cheque with 2 names on it.
Anyone know how this works...
We've just been given a cheque from our soliciter which says pay to myself and my oh's names. We don't have a joint bank account so will one of us be able to bank it in our current accounts?
Just don't want to go and stand in a massive bank queue and be turned away embarrassed!

I used to work in a bank and we wouldn't accept a joint cheque into a single account. Can you return the cheque and ask you solicitor to re-issue it in one name?

I seem to recall it has to be paid into a joint account....
Perhaps ring the bank beforehand?

It needs to be paid into a joint account or re-issued under a different name.
Perhaps this is the time to set up a joint account?

Ask your solicitor to issue a new one. This happened to me when we bought our house.
Your OH may need to sign something to say that he agrees to "joint money" being made payable to "just you"

If kit has to be re-issued the person not named on the chq will have to agree to it being made payable to just the other person

Re: Cheque with 2 names on it.
Thanks guys. In my naiveness I thought I could have just smiled sweetly at the teller and it would have been fine. Will drag oh to bank 2morrow and either open a joint account (its about time anyway) or get him to say that we can pay it into my account.
Can't face getting soliciter to re issue cheque as it took 2 months to get this one out of him! Will do if needs be though!

I put a cheque into my account a couple of months ago that was issued in joint names - no problem at all, they didn't even ask about it.

I meant to let you guys know a couple of days ago that I walked into the Abbey and put the cheque into my account. No questions asked and I don't even think the spotty teenager behind the counter noticed that it was made out to 2 people with different surnames (we are not married) Wasn't sure wether to thank him or questionm him!
