Emily-Rose's Birth Story (very very long)
Well my due date of Thursday 7th June came and went, and I was SO sure that cupcake was going to arrive early. On Tuesday 12th June (5 days over)I had a stretch and sweep to help things get moving. It gave me lots of Braxton hicks, but nothing more than I had already been having. The midwife did tell me that I was already 2cm, which was a good start.
On Wednesday 13th June it was apparent that the sweep had worked, I was having shows all day long (sorry TMI
) at 9pm my BH started getting more regular, they didn’t hurt just a big tightening over my bump.
At 1am on Thursday 14th June, my contractions started getting stronger and Lexx had to rub my back through them. We went to bed at 2am and I couldn’t quite get into bed (I had to keep getting up for the toilet
) the contractions suddenly went very strong and were coming every 5 mins. Lexx strapped the TENS machine on me, which was helping. I paced around for about 10mins, and my contractions sped up to 1 in 2mins, at which point I panicked a little
. Lexx rang the midwife and she was on her way out to me. She arrived at 3.15am examined me and said I was already 4-5cm, which was encouraging, the contractions started to slow down back to every 5mins. So she left.I sat and watched South Park the movie LOL, and Lexx went back to bed to get some sleep.
At 6.15am the pain was getting too much I decided that the TENS wasn’t helping anymore and made Lexx take it off me, and I just breathed through the contractions all on my own! I rang the midwife and asked her to come back with gas and air. She arrived at 6.45am but had forgotten the tubing for the gas and air, so I was still breathing through the contractions on my own. She rang up a student midwife who went to the hospital to pick some up and then came to our house.
The midwife examined me again at 7.00am and said I was 7cm, which was great to hear, especially as I was doing it without pain relief. She then suggested I got into the bath as I had “3 or so hours to go” (and boy was she WRONG
) The bath seemed to make the contractions more intense, at this point I was screaming through them (god knows what the neighbours thought)
.
The student midwife arrived at 7.30am with the gas and air, and I started to use it. It made me feel dizzy at first, but as I got used to it, it had more of an affect on me (spaced out, but FAB) LOL.
Just after 8am I got out of the bath, dried off and went back downstairs into our front room. I laid out on a spare mattress that we had saved for this day, I was still breathing on the gas and air, which was helping but definitely did not “block” the pain. I was laying on my right hand side because I was so tired from having been awake since 9am on Wednesday morning (I hadn’t had the chance to get any sleep before going into labour)
The gas and air canister had just run out (it wasn’t full to begin with) , and the midwife was having problems connecting the new one
, so Lexx ended up doing it!
All whilst I was coping on my own! (brave little soldier that I am)
All of a sudden I had a very large/long contraction, and I couldn’t use the gas and air as I had to “scream” out the contraction, I then felt something “between my legs” (sorry TMI
) and I just KNEW that it was the baby coming and that no one was paying attention to me (the midwife was on my sofa drinking her cup of tea, not paying ANY attention to me screaming
) Lexx was holding my hand and I think he noticed the baby before they did. (The student midwife was also present for the birth) I then screamed out “I want to push”! I didn’t actually have ANY urge to push, just I couldn’t think so what to say to get their attention!
I then heard a sentence I will NEVER forget (and neither will you when you read it)
“I’m going to exam you now Gina, your membranes are bulging out of your vagina” said the midwife.
She was just getting off the sofa, and I screamed my way through another contraction, and cupcake was born at 8.22am still in her waters (so I really am Gina Pissy-Pants
) weighing 6lbs 2oz, the midwife just managed to jump down onto the floor to break the waters and cupcake was handed to me. All I could say was “oh my god, we did it” to Lexx, and I blubbed for the next 10mins. The midwife clamped and cut the cord, and cupcake was wrapped up and handed to Lexx, so I could deliver the placenta. Which was being very stubborn. The midwife then made me walk up the stairs
(which was hard) and deliver the placenta on the toilet!
It came out at 9.00am.
I was then allowed back downstairs and was examined and I had a 2nd degree tear, and had lost almost a pint of blood, the midwife wasn’t sure if she wanted to send me to hospital to get stitched, but she decided to do it herself. It took about 25mins to have 6 stitches, I used more gas and air having the stitches than I did with cupcake, I made sure I was flying with the fairies at this point LOL. I did ask if I could keep the gas and air but they said no…..shame!
I then was allowed to breastfeed cupcake, and she did for about 20mins, I then had a bath to freshen up and we got into our own bed, with cupcake in her little moses basket and went to the land of nod, which I very much needed after not having any sleep for 28 hours!
So the short of it is (a bit late now, I know
) Emily-Rose Kathlyne was born on Thursday 14th June 2007 at 8.22am, weighing 6lbs 2oz, I used my TENS, some gas and air my labour is recorded as 7hours 22mins long, pushing stage is 0mins LOL. It was the fastest delivery the midwife had every seen (not that she was looking) and apparently im now abit of a legend with all the midwives, and each time a new one comes to visit, they say “I heard about your quick birth” LOL
