BLW (yet again sorry!) rice?
so in the true spirit of BLW i let fat baby loose on some sushi today as he was desparate for some
it was only avocado (which he likes) and i peeled the seaweed off. i was dead chuffed but mr b freaked saying he couldn't have rice
(mind you he's freaking a lot these days so it could just have been coincidence)
i would have thought rice would be a perfect BLW food. any thoughts?
oh and another question - after stuffing a roast potato and a roast sweet potato which was fab and he really loved fat baby vommed everywhere. a huge one - i'm pretty sure he wasn't gagging, and it was entire stomach contents so the food must have been digested (not just gagging in his throat if you knwo what i mean). i was a bit
as it was soooo soft i'm sure it would have been fine, the only thing i could come up with was that he just had too much in his stomach. could this have been the case? i mean after six months of just milk it might have been a bit much all at once?
did anyone else have much vomiting?
also gagging, i'm not overly bothered by this as according to the guidelines its all part of the process but again mr b freaks whenever he gags. any advice?
he's picking the food off his tray and putting it in his mouth & moving it to the back of his mouth, but this sometimes causes him to gag (the big bits come straight out so i don't think its that)

Re: BLW (yet again sorry!) rice?
We gave rice from very early on - can be very messy though! If it was mixed with a sauce it was a bit less messy.
Didn't have a problem with vomiting although there was the occasional gagging incident, they quickly passed though. I'd get worried but M would be going for more food straight away so I guess it's part of the learning experience!

Re: BLW (yet again sorry!) rice?
If rice is reheated, and isn't done properly it can have some really nasty bugs - it might be that that your DH is worried about. I'd say if it's cold and has only been cooked once, or has been really thoroughly reheated, it's a really good one, because it's so small!
I odn't think you can do much about them gagging, it's just how they learn how to manage food in their mouth. It's better that he's doing it, it shows it's not going too far dpwn and getting stuck.

Re: BLW (yet again sorry!) rice?
I gave Gemma sticky rice from the start. Overcooked and clumped together, and then I would grill it to give it a slightly harder "shell". Gemma did have a couple of time when she gagged so much that she puked. Most of the time after she had done it she would go ahead and eat more food. I think that it is just a learning curve. I mean, if you really gag the chances are that you will want to be sick, it is the same for them.

Re: BLW (yet again sorry!) rice?
Rice - fine as a finger food as long as it's either freshly made, cold (having been stored safely) or if reheated heated through thoroughly, Reheated rice is a top culprit for food poisoning
and that's probably what Mr B was worried about
Vomiting - is RF a vomity baby anyway? Bea has always vomited loads and it's probably only in the last 2 or 3 weeks that it's reduced.... Can occur any time
Gagging - I had exactly the same with my OH. He refused to feed her unless I was around
I just ignore it (and DH
) and she's coping fine now. She still gags from time to time but usually there's a good explanation and she spits out the offending pear skin/apple core/potato skin/whatever.
Keep going - you're doing fine

Re: BLW (yet again sorry!) rice?
Thomas used to always be sick on mashed potato, not sure why, I don't think he liked the texture as he doesn't really like mash now??

Re: BLW (yet again sorry!) rice?
thanks all
i knew you'd have the answers!
well i'm not afraid of mess! the entire experience seems to be the most messy thing i've ever encountered - broccoli particularly just gets in everything and seems to be impossible to get out
. might try with a little bit of sauce though, that's a good idea
still not entirely sure why he was so against it though, sushi rice is cooked once then eaten cold - i know it was made fresh that morning as well. yeah i thought the smallness was what made it so perfect as well. men! tut sigh....
aw thanks shamu. no he's not really been a hugely sicky baby, i think it could be as you say gemgal, that he's got to get used to the texture - it certainly didn't put him off anyway. splashy's not a big fan of mash either so maybe it runs in the family
yeah i agree with you too skylark, all part of the process imo. ah well, onwards and upwards!
we had banana for breakfast today, its just so cute seeing a little baby eating a banana like a big boy - i just give it to him whole and he sucks the hell out of it
more potato for dinner tonight so we'll see how that goes.
by the way did you worry if big lumps came off in their mouths? with the broccoli yesterday, it was really soft but enormous lumps were coming off in his mouth - he was just sitting there looking at me with his tongue hanging out so i scooped it out. should i have just let him get on with it? i know the theory is that they don't put little bits in their mouth cos htey can't pick them up to start with, but when they break off in their mouths what do you do then?
thanks so much for all your help with this

Re: BLW (yet again sorry!) rice?
Re the gagging, my HV otold me that as long as they are making a noise when they are doing it, then to let them clear it themselves, as the noise indicates there is air getting past. It's when there is silent choking you need to step in
