    Anti-Inflamatories in pregnancy

Anyone know if they're safe? Doc just put me on some yesterday for back pain (which is sooo obviously going to get worse now )

It's official - I'm a total fruit loop Muso says so

Which ones are you on? Most non steroidal anti inflammatories (eg ibuprofen, voltarol and similar) are NOT SAFE in pregnancy (esp early pregnancy) and I'd phone NHS Direct or your surgery to discuss things further.

Just to give you hope - re the anti-inflammatories I was told no - had a lot of back pain in early pg - and sciatica - to point of needing gas and air at one point - BUT get yourself some osteopathy if you can from someone who knows about pg women. I have NO pain now thanks to that and so it won't necessarily get worse if you get the right treatment.

I had a ridiculously painful ear infection when I was about 22 weeks pg and was told by my doctor I was fine to take ibruprofen up until 30 weeks
Perhaps you're not supposed to take it in the 1st trimester either - sorry not much help!!

Spoke to NHS Direct who read from a website that basically said there's no medical evidence to suggest that they would be harmful - unless there were other 'problems' during the pregnancy, think they mean blood pressure etc. Taking them during the last 3 months stops prostaglandin production.

I've decided to live with the pain, don't want to risk anything unless it becomes absolutely unbearable.

Thanks for the replies ladies xxx

Shorty - I had to take non steroidal anti inflammatories the whole way through my pregnancy, and everything was fine. I did have to see an obstetrician regularly and they wanted to scan me regularly to check on the growth of the baby, the fluid levels (which can sometimes be affected) and the baby's kidneys (which can also be affected) If you have to take them they will recommend one that is better for pg - I was on naproxen.
