is this colic?
Hollie is 12 days old now and last night she was so unsettled. Think it may be colic...
All night she wouldnt be put down and if she was she would moan (wasnt screaming crying or anything, just really unsettled), she wasnt hungry either. (shes breastfed)
All I could hear was her poor little tummy making horrible gurgling noises and she was pulling her legs up and tensing her tummy.
Ive tried infacol and I also was massaging her tummy.
Does this sound like colic and if so is there any tips or advice? I feel awful for her.Mummy to Lydia (10) and Hollie (4)

Re: is this colic?
I've replied on the Dec mums thread, but I reckon if she's not screaming it probably isn't colic. It sounds like her tummy is bothering her though. Their digestive systems are so immature and the HV was explaining to me yesterday that their are born with sterile stomachs and have to develop all the necessary bacteria/whatever and it can cause them to have discomfort for quite a while as their systems develop.

Re: is this colic?
Katie - sorry to hear about little Hollie being unsettled
Neither of mine suffered with colic so can't really give much advice re that but it sounds as though you are doing all the right things
I can't believe Hollie will be 2 weeks old on friday
that has gone so quicky!
Hope the mw/hv can help if she is still a bit gripey.
Hope to see you all soon

meemoo
If she is not screaming & going red in the face it might not be colic. When Ollie was tiny he suffered with it terribly & we took him to a Osteopath. she told us that them wriggling around etc & moaning is them working their milk & any wind through their intestines. Ollie used to lie in his moses basket & grunt like a pig!
However if it is colic you can't go wrong with Dr Browns bottles. I did not find Dentinox/Colief/Infacol worked tbh but when she is old enough for gripe water Boots own version is the best one! Don't ask me why...it just is!!!!
I hope for your sake it is not colic

Re: is this colic?
It sounds like it's definitely wind issues so not technically colic but still pretty miserable.
This happened to Olivia and we tried everything as she used to scream with the agony of it all. The things that did seem to help her were Colief and probiotics that go in her milk to help her good bacteria for digestion. I think hers was also down to the antibiotics I took so those thing might not necessarily help.
Other things we did that also seemed to help were piling books under the top legs of her cot so she was at an agle so the wind came up, also making sure she was kept upright for at least 20 mins after every feed including night feeds. We used to pat her back quite firmly with a cupped hand until she burped a few times. Moving her into different winding positions seemed to help bring the wind up.
Amazing how delighted you can be when they eventually burp, isn't it?!
Not sure if Hollie's on bottles or breast - Olivia was breastfed to begin with so the colief was a right old pain but seemed to help, as did infacol (not sure you're supposed to do them both together but they do different things so can't see how it can harm them and Livvy survived... Just.)
I hope it works out soon...
ETA we used the Dr Brown's bottles too which helped (I think but when you're throwing everything at a problem who knows, or cares as long as they help!)Last edited by Hepzibah; 10-01-2007 at 04:43pm.

Re: is this colic?
thanks for all your advice, its much appreciated

Well with a stroke of luck and coincedence the midwife turned up about an hour ago! She said she couldnt rememebr when she was supposed to visit, ie today or tommorow so I told her to come in as I was worried!
She said she doesnt think its colic but is to do with wind! She said to carry on with the infacol and that it can take up to 48hrs to show results anyway. I also asked her to weigh Hollie and I was SO pleased shes put on weight! On sunday she was 7lb 1oz and today she 7lb 4oz
I was so worried that she wasnt feeding properly etc and wouldnt be gaining weight so Im much more reassured!
Ive asked her to come again at weekend to follow up on Hollies gripeness!
Shes still been restless but she had a nice bath and since then shes been asleep...
typical she was fast asleep and contenet when the midwife came..make you out to be liars dont they
