Saddam sentanced to death
What do we all think of this? I was shocked even though it was obvious right from the start what was going to happen.

Re: Saddam sentanced to death
Im not surprised hes been sentanced to death, and I think he deserves it.
I just really hope it doesnt kick off in Iraq again now because of this... I still have lots of friends serving out there

I have mixed feelings about this. Ultimately, I don't think he really cares about whether he dies or not. He dies and he and his supporters see it as him being martyr'd. If he's locked up then the West just sees it as the courts being weak and not taking decisive action.
He's been defiant throughout and from viewing the pictures on BBC news 24, nothing much seems to have changed...

Re: Saddam sentanced to death
WEll, I don't agree with the death penalty, so I'm hardly likely to think this is a great idea.
Does anyone know if they are actually likely to carry out the sentence, or if it is likely to be commuted to life imprisonment?
Like JT and Angel said, my biggest concern is what will happen in Iraq in particular, but the middle east in general
no matter how far you have travelled down the wrong road, you can always turn around.

Re: Saddam sentanced to death
From what I read this morning, this will now go to a higher court to review whether or not he had a fair trial. If they say no, then he will be retried, if they say yes, then the death penalty will be carried out within 30 days.
I believe this will open a can of worms in the Middle East. He is an evil man, but he will be martyred and the west will also pay for it.
On a human level, I don;t believe in the death penalty. The rest of his life behind bars with hard labour would work for me.Mum, writer, occasional nutcase.

Re: Saddam sentanced to death
Tbh I agree with Lola.
I'm not denying he's done some evil things and I'm not going to be sorry if he's hung but it doesn't mean it's the right thing to do.
I have big issues about how this all came about though. Whatever his crimes, I'm not convinced that the West barging into Iraq and removing him from power was the best course of action. I'm curious to know what a majority of Iraqis think about what Saddam's removal from power has done for both the current and future stability of Iraq. It's so hard to get an impartial view from just watching Western media.

Re: Saddam sentanced to death
Just to make myself clear, I'm totally opposed to the death penalty, and I also think that this whole process has been gone about the wrong way. Surely life in prison would be much more of a punishment than death?
I think they were saying on the BBC this morning that most people in Iraq, even those who agree with the death penalty, don't think it will change anything, and could make things a whole lot worse.

Re: Saddam sentanced to death
TBH, i just saw this piece of news as i was opening my msn , and my first reaction was that i felt quite upset about it as in sad upset, because though it may be what he deserves ( or it couldve been dealt with in a different punishment) i think whats shocked me most was that we as human beings we are jus goin to kill another human being( i say "just", but i know its not that clean cut he has dne some truely evil things) but i dnt believe we should resort to the same level as he has, to kill someone, - this makes me feel very un-easy and to be honest, i dnt think we would be any better than him in a way if we were to kill him, whether he deserves that particular punishment or not
. Its a tough one, but in general it jus scares me of what we're capable and makes me uneasy about what the future holds if this punishment is carried out.

Re: Saddam sentanced to death
I just don't know what to think about this.
There's no denying Saddam is a truly evil man and did some horrendous things but I feel that the conclusion of the trial has given him what he wants - notoriety and martyrdom.
Life for Iraqis has been a lot worse since the West invaded and toppled him from Power.
I regularly read a blog by a young Iraqi woman and she tells the truth about how the Iraqi's feel, how they are living, etc. Here it is: http://riverbendblog.blogspot.com/
It's interesting to read that since the 'war against Saddam' started, over 600,000 Iraqis have been killed
I sometimes think letting him stay in power would have been the lesser of two evils.

Re: Saddam sentanced to death
He wasn't a huge threat to us after all - he may have had some nuclear or biological weaponry, but I don't think even he would have been stupid enough to use them. For all the posturing by him and other rogue leaders/terrorists, they all know that once you get into murdering on a scale like that (ie: with gas or nuclear weapons) you pretty much sign your own death certificate.

Life imprisonment with hard labour and community service would do it for me.

Re: Saddam sentanced to death
I haven't had chance to watch the news, read a paper today, but from what I understood of that report, he has been sentanced by an iraqi court?

I just don't really know where I stand, so maybe I should just be quiet
on one hand he shouldn't be allowed things he has taken from others - food, shelter, health etc. but then I don't agree with the death penalty either!

Re: Saddam sentanced to death
Death is just an easy way out for people like him. He should be serving his time in prison like the rest of the murderers.
