Has anyone's child had a turn in their eye/squint?

A couple of months ago my Dad mentioned that DD2s eye had turned. It was over a week until I seen it happen. It only turned when she pulled a face.

In recent weeks it has been happening more and more. DH thought it was nothing but I took her to the optician anyway. The optician was able to see it before we even got into the testing room.

She is to go back next week and have eye drops put in to dilate the eye. I think he'll do further tests/checks.

He was keen to make it a relaxed experience for her as he said she'll have a series of appointment. I am unclear what will happen next though. I think e said her vision is ok although she said that some images were footprints, they were actually a tulip like flower and a fish. He said she'd got to 12 but I have no idea what that means.

Just wondered if anyone has experience of this?

Lucypede is an opthamologist, hopefully she'll be along soon and give you some advice.

Camille has a squint from her surgery, I can't recall much of the testing as her squint was originally in both eyes, turned towards her nose (it was awful for a few days after surgery). Her right eye was completely turned in until we started patching her good eye. Although the squint is still there, it's barely visible.

She wore the patch for 4-6 hours a day for the first six months, reduced to 2 hours a day last six months and now 1 hour. It's possible it won't get any better than it is, which is fine by me. We have the option of surgery, but we won't pursue it, Camille can make that decision when she's older xx

Actually Lucypede might be an optometrist (sp?) - I never know which one she is - sorry hun!

Thanks, was she happy to wear the patch? DD heard DH mention this and she was adamant that she'd not wear one as she'd not be able to see. Hopefully a Peppa Pig pirate story would help persuade her otherwise.

I read that patching is usually the first step but it mentioned using glasses or eye drops to blur the good eye.

I always get mixed up between the two but I believe that she will be able to give some great advice!

P.s I agree about the surgery, my thoughts were the same as yours when I read about it through googling.

Me niece wore a patch on one eye when she was about 4, it wasn't a problem at all and her parents were able to bribe her to wear it. Sorry, no more idea about your DD but it sounds like they are looking after her.

    Thanks Mrs B.

DH was the one who thought she was fine. I insisted that it needed to be checked/probably ruled out. He now has his knickers in a twist worrying. It sounds as though things can improve if it is treated from a young age before everything is fully developed (7/8 yrs usually).

Yes Chell, it really can be sorted out with patching and the younger they are, the better. Camille didn't mind the patching at first (they have some funky designs!) but then as she got older she hated it more and more. We bought her a lovely pair of occluding glasses, can't remember the website but Lucypede will know. She loves wearing them at school and all the other kiddies want a pair!

If you get a chance do a search on here or FB for pics of Camille from Xmas 2011 and then look at recent ones, you really can't tell she has/had a squint. Her right eye also sits slightly higher than the left, but this is nerve damage and patching won't help that.

Ds2 (7) got glasses for his squint (which I hadn't noticed) in November. He's had the drops twice and is on 3 monthly follow ups but they've decided not to patch him for now as the glasses are working.
