    Cows milk in cereal?

I have just started weaning DD (she's 5 months). I am breastfeeding but due to a bad expressing experience with my first son do not want to express to put milk in her baby rice/cereal. So far I have been buying little cartons of ready made formula but it seems such a waste as I don't use much each time and my mum said that when we were babies she just put cows milk in our food, is that ok to do?

I don't use cows milk yet for my DS ( 6 months) I'm not sure what the recommendation is but I've never used cows mlk before 12 months.

I've used cows milk with all of mine from start of weaning.
Breast milk as main drink, but cows milk in food.

The yellow booklet from the HV says whole milk is fine in food from 6mo, but not as a drink. I wouldn't use it before that TBH. Though the chances of getting Baby S to accept anything other than formula as being edible seem quite slim! We're trying him on veggies mashed with formula at the moment but he thinks they are YUKKY. As is banana.

You can leave the 200ml cartons open for 24h, though it doesn't sound like you'd use that up in that time, but they aren't that expensive, or (though it's a faff) make up just an ounce or two at a time from powdered which you can then keep in the fridge for 24h?

Or hold off on cereal till she's 6mo, give her veggies now?

Totally what Dr S said, just fruit and veg now as her gut isn't mature enough for anything else (or totally hold off weaning until 6m when she can have everything except honey - remember there are no calories in pureed carrot!) and then when she is 6m cows milk on cereal is fine.

Try getting the cereal varieties that have the milk already in- I think Heinz do one called Creamy Porridge. I wouldn't give cows milk before 6 months but after that it's fine. I also never bothered with full fat milk.

You could use rice milk instead.

Unless you are worried about arsenic toxicity in rice milk - the food standards agency don't recommend it for babies under 12m

Oh right, ignore me then I was going to suggest soya milk, is that OK?

    Otherwise, I would use formula.
