Alastair James birth story. Very positive CSection.

On Sunday the 17th June the labour ward rung to tell us that we had to be at the hospital at 7.30am on the Monday morning. We had run about all weekend putting together babies chest of drawers/tidying/ getting ready so on Sunday night we both sat down and it really hit us that we were going to have a baby in the morning!

I didn’t sleep that much so got up on Monday morning at about 5am- had a shower and we got a taxi in to the hospital. Bloody London traffic- sat on Euston road for ages in heavy traffic but luckily we had left plenty of time so got there by 7.20am.

Midwife met us, showed us to a cubicle where we both changed into gown/tights and OH’s scrubs. OH had to put my socks on and we both had to stifle laughter! Midwife took vitals/details and said that I looked really happy and that she wanted me to stay like this!. Had a chat with anethnitist and then obstetrician then they left us alone- my heart was in my mouth as they told us that we were first to go in. Midwife came to get us and we both walked into theatre.
Anaesthetist put a canula in my hand- not painful at all. She then put the anasthetic in my back- sharp scratch followed by the spinal block. I was dreading this but it wasn’t so painful as I’d expected.

My legs became hot and tingly so they layed me down on the trolley and wired me up to all the machines. It took about 20 mins for the spinal to work- I was panicking that I could still feel but OH was watching their countdown clock and assured me that they wouldn’t start until it was working.

The screen was put up and it took only 10 mins for baby to be born. I was shocked at how much I could feel- sensations but just no pain. Alastair screamed his heart out when he was born and I cried when I heard it.

He was taken over to the scales to be cleaned and weighed. My first view of him was his backside and I exclaimed “He’s got huge nuts” which made the whole theatre laugh!

Al was brought over to us and we had hugs while I was sewn up- this took quite along time. I felt loads of pressure on my tummy which was unpleasant. My blood pressure also dropped which made me feel sick. I was given something for the sickness. I also couldn’t stop shaking- it was a bit crazy! A catheter was put in and then we were taken to recovery. The journey up there was horrible as the porter bumped into every corner- I was beginning to feel quite a bit of pain.

We spent 2 hrs in recovery hugging our son/skin to skin and just staring at him! It took ages for the feeling in my legs to come back – very weird sensations! I had some more pain relief and then we were wheeled up to the ward.

Mum arrived at 4pm, friends arrived at 8pm for visits. That night was the longest of my life- only 1 midwife was on so I had to struggle to lift him my self- not easy after a section. I was glad when they allowed me to go home the next evening.

This was quite possibly the most happiest and amazing experience of my life. I’d had a rough start in pregnancy losing my Dad at 13 weeks but this planned Csection was incredible- very professional and caring hospital staff. I would do it all again- but just not for a while!

We are totally totally in love with him

Ah lovely to hear the birth story Amy! Glad it all went so well, apart from having to manage on your own that first night.

Congratulations. & a massive well done.

I also had a c section and it was positive except my first night (and second) where I was left to struggle with lifting my baby.

    Take it easy and enjoy.

Lovely to hear Amy - I too had the shakes with my first (not my second though...) and was told it was a reaction to the anaesthetic...

Enjoy your cuddles, and I hope your recovery is swift x

    Lovely name, congratulations!

I love reading the positive C Section stories, both of mine were also great! I had the shakes and sickness both times too.
