Question about other parents giving lifts to school events
DS has been picked to represent the school next week along with two others in his class and others in the school. We only got the letter today and it asks if we consent to him going and also if we can drive some of the other children there if we are insured to do so, then If we can't help with transport (which i can't) do we consent to another parent taking him.
Now DS has never done anything like this before so I don't know if it's what usually happens, the school getting parents to transport other kids. I wouldn't mind if I knew who the parent is, but I'm not sure that will be decided till they actually go. Doesn't mention anywhere about having to have a CRB either which I'm surprised about.
I'm going to speak to his teacher tomorrow, but just wanted to see if this is the norm!
ETA its in school time.
Thanks

Re: Question about other parents giving lifts to school events
When I've helped with Brownie transport to events I haven't been crb checked & there's been no mention of it. Nor when my parents drove me & a few friends to swimming galas.
It all sounds normal to me - can you give a child a lift, if you can't do you mind someone else giving them a lift.
Eta - well done on your son getting selected.

Re: Question about other parents giving lifts to school events
well done to your DS
the lifts things sounds fairly normal to me, we've been asked if we can help transport before, I don't think we've been asked if we consent to her going in another parents car but I can't be sure. Its a tiny school though so usually her teacher takes the whole class (all 6 of them) in her car.....

Oh Wow! I did know this already, but it just seems so lovely written like this

I haven't come across this scenario, so don't know what the norm is for us.
You have reminded me though of when our slightly batty Art teacher took me & 3 other 5th year pupils on a trip once ... she realised she was on the wrong motorway and did a U turn with us
I was gobsmacked. Stupid woman.

Re: Question about other parents giving lifts to school events
I have to agree, it is normal. However, I am sure the school did ask on entrance whether or not I was a parent who would be willing to help transport other children to events.
Generally events concern other children in my children's peer group so I know the parents involved. Some, like me have CRB checks as we work as dinnerladies in the school, but it isn't a requirement as far as I understand, it would take too long to implement as you are reliant on which ever parents are available with suitable transport at the time in question. It will usually be a parent whose child is also participating in the event.
Hope you get a satisfactory response and are re-assured. I know how disappointing it can be not to be able to go yourself to watch.

Re: Question about other parents giving lifts to school events
Very interesting thread to watch!
My understanding is that the best way is for school to informally suggest that parents arrange lifts amongst themselves- thereby absenting the school for CRB type responsibilities and the parents from any insurance liabilities too- you are allowed to carry your kids mates in the car, of course as a normal thing, but if it is formalised "transport" I think the goals move.
DH takes kids as a teacher and has it on his insurance. He is of course crb checked and always takes 3 or 4, 2 reluctantly, and 1 never (or with another teacher)

Thanks for the replies. I have consented to him going and said I'm happy for him to be transported, but will ask his teacher Monday morning who he will be going with. Unfortunately there are 130 children in his year alone, so the chances of me knowing the parents going are slim!

Re: Question about other parents giving lifts to school events
I regularly used to ferry a few of the school football team around when ds2 was on it. It saves money from the school budget being used on taxis etc
DS1 16,
DS2 14,
DD 11
