Gift ideas for 12 year old boy

I'm not great with this age group, I want to get a wee gift for DS1's buddy as he has been great with him. He's quite sporty but pretty academic too, so I wondered about a book, possibly a reference book of some kind.
He's going to High School after summer, so it would be a kind of 'thank you and good luck' pressie.

oh actually - I have just remembered I have Bill Bryson's A really short history of nearly everything stashed ... would this be too young? I was keeping it for DS1's Christmas, but maybe an 11/12 year old would enjoy it too?
