Re: Wht age to get a girl's ears pierced?
Once I was allowed the first holes, I went on to have loads more put in my ear on a school trip in italy
Then I got my belly button done when I was 15. There wasn't really any stopping me when I was a teenager tbh. It annoyed me that my parents didn't agree with me, and I didn't like upsetting them, but it didn't stop me doing anything

Re: Wht age to get a girl's ears pierced?
I think I would let C get hers done at around 7 or 8... but someone else would have to take her as I would get the collywobbles.

Re: Wht age to get a girl's ears pierced?
DD has recently had hers done, shes nine and a half. We said from the age of 8 that whe she said she wanted them done she could - when the next "treat" was due.
She turns them herself and she cleans them in the morning and I do them at night.
Three of her friends had them done at the same time. At DDs school they have to put plasters over when they do PE and that applies however recently they have had them done.

Re: Wht age to get a girl's ears pierced?
Birth?? Normal for some communities.
Never???
Your child HER choice I guess .
But my 2p...... secondary are getting more and more H+S about earrings- they have to be OUT for PE here not just single studs or covered with a plaster. So Getting them done at the start of the summer is the only option, and they girl needs to be happy to pop them in and out without faffing in a mirror etc by school return date.
FWIW DD1 had hers done at 16, DD2 hasn't yet and hasn't nagged.

Re: Wht age to get a girl's ears pierced?
I had mine done at 8, which seemed so late back then as so many of my childhood friends had had them done as babies/toddlers. I begged for years and was allowed them for my 8th birthday.
I'm hoping Anna remains completely oblivious to ear-piercing for a while yet. Several of her school friends have got them now but I personally feel that 4/5yrs old is too young - she's only in reception and I just don't see the point in them having them so young. She hasn't asked anything about them and doesn't see me wearing earrings as I didn't put them back in after they were removed when she was born and they have now closed up - I keep meaning to get them re-pierced though so maybe she'll ask then. At the moment I'm thinking she can have them done when she's ten, but definitely no younger than eight.

Re: Wht age to get a girl's ears pierced?
Just getting back to this - busy few days!
Thank you all for your thoughts. I'm none the wiser!
Still it's good to know that if I say not till she's 10/11/12, this seems a common starting point.
I don't think I've explained to A about the process nor has she seen it being done, I'll do that as that might stop the constant asking.
I don't think there are any issues here with wearing earrings in the pool or for gym, must find out!

Re: Wht age to get a girl's ears pierced?
My parents said I could have them done at 9 after I nagged and nagged, but I chicked out when they took me!! Got them done at 24!!! Love them now but I was surprised how it throbbed afterwards and I felt quite squeamish twisting them and one got a bit infected just after, although they're fine now.
For DD I'd say not before 8 but I'd prefer more like 10 really for reasons listed above about self-care and PE at school etc.

Re: Wht age to get a girl's ears pierced?
Just wanted to update this post that I took A to get her ears pierced about four weeks ago. It was just a day with the two girls as J had a playdate and I did it as a surprise. She couldn't believe it!
She was a bit shocked by the gun and shut her eyes tight when the second one was done. The first night she complained about them hurting and stopping her from sleeping. She has been great at turning them and cleaning them. I remember having weeping but she's had nothing.
She is very happy. So a positive experience for us.

Re: Wht age to get a girl's ears pierced?
Glad it has been a positive experience for you and your DD.
I think my stance on piercing has relaxed as mine have gotten older and it doesn't seem as *big* a deal anymore. I think if the child is old enough to seriously ask over a time scale, and mature enough to understand that it will likely hurt, and help to keep them clean, then it's worth considering. For some girls this is as early as 7 or 8.

Re: Wht age to get a girl's ears pierced?
Most pools say "no jewellery" and although adults will wear studs into the pool, swimming with school is another matter. And she might start a new class or something or you might move to a different one maybe?
I was 13 and my mum made me wait till then because she didn't like the look of pierced ears full stop. I personally don't like the look on tiny girls (especially not preschool age) and I don't really see the point in primary aged girls, though they don't look as bad.
However my mum had refused for ages and thought they looked so bad and THEN (but we did all laugh about it) after I had them done she looked at other people wearing them and at the earrings in the shops and had hers done within a month!
My SIL was thinking of getting my nieces' ears pierced at about 6 months (again, cultural) and my brother said no mainly because I think he wanted them to have the choice. I think the older girl has them done now, her choice (she's 8) but it may have been pushed by most of the girls in her class having them done, so not her own thought really.

Re: Wht age to get a girl's ears pierced?
I had my ears done at 5.5. They got really badly infected. I can only wear expensive earrings

DD1 has been asking but I've told her she can have hers done in the summer holidays between P7 and S1.
Claire's Accessories have a brilliant selection of clip ons and DD1 has loads of pairs...they'll keep her going for just now.
