Anyone successfully delivered a breech baby?

I had a growth scan yesterday as baby is ever so slighty large and have been told that the baby is extended breech, i have another appointment next week with the consultant to check again and if he is still upside down they will be booking me in for a ecv.

Now i know that this being my 4th and time allowed that there is a high probability that the baby will turn of his own accord and that intervention won't be necessary, or that the ecv may be successful.
However although they have told me what my options are, 1 being a breech vaginal delivery what literature i have been given and stuff i have read online would suggest that being allowed to try and give birth vaginally is highly unlikely and they will pretty much bully me in to a section regardless.

I haven't found much to say otherwise really, so has anyone had any experiences.

Not experience of delivering a breech baby but Oscar was a BIG baby and we found out he was breech at 37 weeks, he stayed that way till 39 weeks and managed to turn (he was just under 10 pounds when born) so I'd def say your little man def has time to turn, especially being your 4th.
i took pulsatilla, had moxibustion/acupuncture as well as all the positions etc you're supposed to sit in.
I certainly wouldn't agree to a section until his due date based on the fact that my ds2 turned at a point when, had they have had it their way, he would've been born already.
i also think, being your 4th that they should give you the option of vaginal delivery...hope some one can come along with more advice soon

Not personally, but I think it's down to the fact that very few midwives and docs have experience of delivering a breech baby. Could it be worth phoning around a few hospitals to see if any of them have that experience? I know my friend delivered an (undiagnosed) breech baby in our local hospital and a few midwives were really pleased about it as it gave them that experience. Good luck!

My sister was breech and my Mum delivered her naturally. This was 36 years ago though so not sure how helpful it is to you!

I'd find the most experienced midwife you can to speak to.

My friends sister had an undiagnosed breech baby last year, she found out too late to do anything but deliver him naturally. All I know is she was a bit sore afterwards, but then that's part of it all anyway!

Re: Anyone successfully delivered a breech baby?

I'd thoroughly research the risks of birthing a breech baby. They don't section lightly, there are many risks to breech babies, some serious and it's just not worth the risk trying fr a vaginal birth.

I believe any intervention is highly risky with breech. I vaguely remember that touching the baby triggers the breathing response, which is life threatening when the head hasn't been delivered. So you're pretty much relying on everything going perfectly, if the baby gets stuck in any way or you need any help delivering you're in deep trouble.

Obviously your chances of the baby turning are pretty high with it being your 4th. But please don't think them recommending a section for breech is for anything other than your babys safety. As ever, thoroughly research and then decide what risks you're willing to take.

Re: Anyone successfully delivered a breech baby?

DD was foot down breech at 40wks (undiagnosed until then) and they tried an ecv which was unsuccessful. After they had tried to force her to turn for about 20 mins the nurse pointed out again to the consultant that I was term and baby was foot down and the only option I was given was c section as it is considered too risky to deliver feet first (and it was my first).
