Acne - what has worked for me

Thought I'd write a thread as I know there are some ladies on here that are currently suffering with their skin and it might help someone.

I've had crap skin for about 20 years, knew there was a diet connection but couldn't seem to pin it down. However breaking up with my ex last year culminated in months and months of horrendous, massive spots and new blocked pores everyday, it had never been so bad. So weirdly this crappy period in my life gave me the huge breakthrough I needed to sort it out, so these are the principles I now employ and my skin is 98% clear and has been since before Xmas

    1) don't eat refined sugar, and if you must, never eat it on its own, ie have pudding after a protein rich dinner. Now you can eat carbs, I don't go bonkers, but I do have pasta, white bread, cereal regularly and my skin doesn't mind. I NEVER eat stuff like chocolate, cake, sweets, puddings etc. To my mind sugar is the no. 1 trigger for my acme and to prove this I ate a piece of cake at the beginning of the year, at my friend's son's birthday, and two days later I had a huge spot and grease pouring from my pores.

    2) try not to overeat. I was in a binge, starve cycle and I believe it sent my insulin mad causing acne. Now I let myself have the stuff I want, carbs etc, and stop when I'm starting to get full. Back last year, when it was at its worst, I was hardly eating for a few days, then eating everything in sight over a few hours until I felt physically sick. Really really bad idea. Your digestion wants small portions of food frequently. If you eat so much you start sweating, you've kicked yr insulin off and you're going to get spots

It's great that you've found something that works for you, I have to point out though that insulin doesn't cause spots, if it did then all the carbs would be making you spotty!

    Interesting, thanks for sharing

I see from your ticker that you are pregnant (congrats btw!) and wondered what effect this has had on your skin? I've had bad skin all my adult life but when I've been pregnant, both times, had the best skin I've ever had

Hadn't quite finished but got interrupted!

The last thing I've found out recently is odd, but I read about it online. Even though the goosebump flesh known as KP went on my upper arms when my spots cleared, I still continued to get spots on my chest (occasionally) and buttocks (most of the time). Anyway I was researching it online and found a post that recommended switching from standard milk to UHT. Well I did this a few weeks ago and I have no more bad skin on my body. Obviously it could be a coincidence but I thought it was worth a mention.

    Hope this might help someone

    Thanks Inks.

I know pregnancy can absolutely have an effect on the skin both good and bad, I haven't noticed much change really. I tend to get blocked pores on my forehead and between my eyebrows, and I still get those suckers. I also get the odd spot on my chin, so its not flawless, but just much much better since I would say October/November (i got pregnant end of Feb.

Anyway l wasn't going to post a thread about it at all as I know these subjects can turn testy for some reason, but I thought even if it helped one person then I've saved someone some misery.

Daisy we will agree to differ. I think diet absolutely plays a part in hormone regulation and I think insulin is involved, but I respect you disagreeing with me
