How do you decide whether you want to move or not?

I know it sounds like a weird question but here is goes...

I love love my little house. Its on a quiet close, the kids can play, neighbours are lovely downstairs is perfect size wise.

    But

Upstairs is too small, I only have one double wardrobe. The girls share and Jasper has a tiny bedroom which you can put a single bed in and thats all. I cant have a loft conversion because I have a shallow roof and I would like a fourth child

    So

We are thinking we could move. To get a four bed it may have to be out of my perfect area so a drive to primary school but still in secondary catchment. I could have my fourth but I just feel about leaving this house....I also feel about not having a fourth and the girls sharing a fairly small space forever.

I would love to wait a year and decide but DH is desperate to go part time so we wouldn't have the salary to get a mortgage IYSWIM?

    How do you decide?

Is there no way you could do a two-floor extension?

I'm terraced so can only go on the back. I dont think I would gain more than a metre on the kids bedrooms so not sure if its worth the expense? Dont want to do it and them hve to move anyway iyswim?

I'm might get an architect in and see if there's any way we can expand.

We weren't sure as well. We had a great flat but it was becoming apparent the space wasn't working for us with the kids growing up etc. We were adamant we would make it work cause we loved our flat so much, but a house came up just round the corner cheaper than our flat, though bigger, so we just decided to go for it, better quality of life as smaller mortgage, great for kids playing out, boys have their own rooms, nice to have two floors so we can escape from each other, possibility for extenstion. So I was a bit sad to leave our flat before we moved, but the minute we moved I totally forgot about it and fell in love with the new place, no regrets at all.

Have you done all the sums etc, its worth looking at properties and finding out what your actual budget is etc.

I think that's the discussion you need to have with your dh. If its a money thing is a fourth child or going part time more important to him? Would you ask him to stay full time so you can have another child? I may be picking up the wrong vibe here but you use *I* throughout your post- "I could have my fourth child"- where does your dh come into it? What does he think?

If you do move now and then your dh goes part time could you afford the bigger mortgage? It sounds to me like you either stay where you are for the foreseeable future if your dh wants to go pt, or you move when you get a bigger income.

I would look at extending options first; if you love your current location - it's much easier to find a perfect house than it is to find a perfect location.

this is a great scheme to give you potential ideas and see if it's do-able..

My OH has wanted to move for ages, but I love my house, love the road and my neighbors, plus it's literally 2 mins from school.

However, since A has got a bit bigger and become more of an impact on the space - mainly downstairs - upstairs is livable, if a bit crampe, we decided to look around and now we appear to be on our way to a new house by the end of summer

Oh blimey BG! How do you feel about that?

Faith - thanks but you did get the wrong vibe. DH is aware of the 4th child element and we would be able to manage either way income wise as we wouldn't be extending the mortgage a great deal. Its more the personal wrench of moving versus not and potentially no room for the 4th.

I am now thinking two storey extension making our house into a very generous 3 bed...where do you start!?

Will check out that site x
