Re: Is this a scam- call from Microsoft?
As you have downloaded the software, be careful about any messages that come up for a while. These programs can hide themselves and pop up when you least expect it.
Do you have a decent internet security package?
As a precaution I would also ensure that any pics, documents and other important stuff is backed up. The last time our machine went beserk the only we could recover it, to make it work right, was to reset to factory settings.libertygal

SCAM. What's worse is that FIL won't believe us and handed over his credit card details for what is actually free antivirus software. To be honest that's as far as it seems to have gone.

Re: Is this a scam- call from Microsoft?
complete scam! I get calls from them at least twice a week. I usually tell them I don't have a computer, which really foxes them as it's not on their script.
They're after remote access to your computer at which point someone who knows what they are doing takes all your passwords & plants viruses etc. It's pretty well known, but so sad that some people fall for it (they must do or they wouldn't continue with the calls).

Re: Is this a scam- call from Microsoft?
My favourite thing to say is that it's a works laptop and that I need them to contact my IT dept or get my IT dept to call them and can I have a contact number. They insist it's my personal PC (I don't have a PC) and not a work laptop and I just stick to my guns telling them all about the forms that's I'll need to fill in etc. Usually they get very exasperated and tell me I am 'not understanding them' and then hang up.
I don't always do it though, very often I just say no thanks and hang up.xx Hermie xx

If you run Windows then Windows Security Essentials is a good anti-virus application, and free:
