Re: Would you support the death penalty in the UK?
Isn't that the issue, though, with having families involved in sentencing? i would have thought that yes the effect on a family should be taken into account but other than that the punishment should be fair and objective and I'm just not sure families can always be either of those things after a crime is committed against them.

The victims' families wouldn't be deciding the punishment, but the effect of the crime on them would be taken into account. That is how I understand it. On the other hand some victims' families may have seen another side to the story and feel the guilty party can be treated with more leniency.

Re: Would you support the death penalty in the UK?
No.
others have summed up my main objections already but to reiterate.
1) it doesn't work as a deterrent
2) it is unethical - two wrongs don't make a right, etc
3) flawed judicial process

Definitely not for all the above reasons, although there will always be the tiny less 'evolved' part of me that screams YES

Re: Would you support the death penalty in the UK?
No I do not support it, I don't believe it is correct for anyone to take a life for whatever reason and it doesn't act a deterrent in countries where they do have the death penalty plus there is too much of margin of error.
But I do believe that life should mean life and not the life that a lot of our prisoners currently get, TV, higher education that people on the outside get into thousands of pounds worth of debt to get and a myriad of other things that I don't think are basic human rights. I also think that there are degrees of murder too, one thing I would like to see in this country is a murder charge for those people that drink or drug drive or anyone that causes a death by any other illegal act.
My husband thinks that the family of the murdered or abused person should have an hour alone in a soundproof room with the convicted person!

I agree with Biba, also where there is certain proof of murder I'd support sterilisation (and I'd include death by dangerous driving here). Sort of, if you take someone else's life you wreck a family and should forfeit the right to more children of your own.
I guess that only makes a difference if people are eventually released!

No.
I actually find it hard, with every fibre of my being, to see how people can support it.
