Re: Did anybody else think there was just one Olympic torch?
I didn't think there was a torch for each runner - you'd imagine they would have spares but not one each at a cost of between £400-£500 a torch to make! However, it does get a lot of publicity and the torch is near us this week, I'm hoping to take DD.
One year the main flame in the stadium went out, I believe a cleaner lit it with a lighter and it had to be extinguished and relit with the 'proper' flame

Oh I see, so they are being sold on at a loss.
Like you say, sounds like we the people got shafted by whoever made them
Mind you the Olympics makes a packet from sponsorship, so hopefully that paid for them.

Re: Did anybody else think there was just one Olympic torch?
Just seen this on the Mail online article about Will.I.Tweet
It cost £495 to make each torch, but runners were offered the chance to buy them for just £215 while those who won their places through sponsors such as Coca-Cola were given them free.

I always thought it was lots of torches, but the same flame (if that makes sense).

No, because I keep hearing on the radio and TV about people buying them (or not, because they can't afford to). Oh, and now selling them eBay.

I make it £1,600,00. I imagine they make about half that, if everybody buys theirs. And it must cost a packet just to organise the torch relay.

i thought it was a twitter joke
yep i thought it was just the one (and when i was 'cough cough' younger - i used to think it stayed lit, even on the plane over to the country who was holding the games)
