2 Whole chickens in the slow cooker - how long?

I'm doing 2 chickens (together) in the slow cooker tomorrow but don't know whether or not to increase the amount of time I give them compared to if I was just cooking 1. My head is telling me it makes sense to increase the time but I don't know for sure, nor by how much.

    Any ideas?

I would increase it, certainly do when I do 2 in the oven, but couldn't give you any figures as I don't have a slow cooker. Sorry, not much help there!

    LOL!

LG If I doubled it, they would be in there for aages, it just seems too long Like Mrs B says, if I was doing 2 in the oven I wouldn't cook them for 4 hrs instead of 2 for example.

Can you not just stab them to see if they are cooked?

But I'd assume the chooks are packed in tight and would need that long
BTW, how big are these chooks, and do you have a mahoosive slow cooker then?

    Also, ask
@mediocre_mum on twitter as she is the slow-cooker queen

    Anne - about 5hrs, sometimes 6.

LG - we do have one of the big ones, there is space around the chickens. 'Tis a good point though. Thanks for the twitter tip, will ask her

Yes just bung it in. No additional liquid needed.

Whole chicken is my top favourite slow cooker meal. The meat just falls off the bone, so there's no waste at all. You can pour off the liquid afterwards, and get the stock and fat off too Makes me feel very Earth Mother

Do you have to put it in the oven after to brown up? Or just take the skin off? I imagine the skin would be a bit manky just being done in the slow cooker

All these q's about whole chooks made me LOL. So did parkejm get an answer (or are the chooks still cooking )?

One chicken takes about 4-5 hours on high. The skin tends to go sort of dry-ish and crispy-ish, but not really very nice to eat. So, not only is the chicken great, you also get to feel virtuous about not scoffing large quantities of crispy skin!

Re: 2 Whole chickens in the slow cooker - how long?

oops, forgot to update this! I very briefly browned the chicken in a pan and then put them in the SC on some sliced onions and carrots and seasoned them. Then I put them on high for 3.5 hrs and then checked them. They seemed to be cooking very nicely so I added a large glass of water and turned it down to medium. Checked it again an hour later and turned it down to low for another hour and a half before turning it off an hour before dinner.

They were cooked through and may not have needed that long at all so it definitely didn't need double the time. There was lots of very tasty juices/gravy at the bottom which was also gobbled up
