Re: Could a non-cheesy 80s night be done?
I think it's a really good idea. Avoid modern-day students' idea of an 80s night, and target people who can remember the 80s.
I just don't know how you'd go about marketing it though, without calling it an 80s night, which obviously puts everyone in mind of Tiffany and Toni Basil and attracts people who don't want to hear anything that isn't on 'Now That's What I Call 80s!'.
I'm not sure if I've ever been anywhere with an 80s theme where cheese wasn't the name of the game. I'll have a think...

You could, actually, call it The Non Cheesy Eighties Night

Re: Could a non-cheesy 80s night be done?
OMG Eagles, we used to call it Seagulls. I was in there once, towards the end, with a work night out. My workpal ended up in a fight in the toilets and we had to leave pronto! She was attacked by two girls but they got the wrong person and my pal ended up putting one of the attackers head down the toilet...in self defence!
Mel Gibson must have been around the time he was filming either Hamlet or Braveheart.

I think Alternative 80s is a good idea.
I agree, you won't make anything on the bar at a Northern Soul night. I used to work on the bar in a club that did all-nighters and we could just stand and listen to the music all night because everyone else was speeding their tits off.

Re: Could a non-cheesy 80s night be done?
I used to call it Beagles, but I've never been either. I was way too cool to go there

How about themed 80s nights, rather than generic 80s, maybe a ska and reggae night, an alternative/indie night, northern soul night already been mentioned, a rock night. Different crowds I'd imagine.

Re: Could a non-cheesy 80s night be done?
This is the one I've been to:
"Sound of the Crowd is an alternative 80's club, upstairs at The Hatchet, Frogmore Street, Bristol on the first Saturday of every month. Playing an eclectic mix of New Romantica, Synthpop, Traditional Goth and New Wave. 9pm until 2am (last entry 1am) £3 before 11pm and £4 after R.O.A.R"

Re: Could a non-cheesy 80s night be done?
http://www.barsandvenues.co.uk/ - the reflex 80s bar is quite popular, there's a few up and down the country.
I like the idea of alternative 80s.
