Re: Endometrial Ablation
Oh Rosey
give yourself some time to mull it over - and your Dad's idea of asking the specialist is a really good one
Would fibroids mean an ablation was contra-indicated? My GP thinks I have fibroids and I'm just putting up with it all at the moment but wanted to have ablation 'up my sleeve' as it were ...Dilly xx

Re: Endometrial Ablation
Yes, you can't have an ablation while you have fibroids. That's why she examined me, luckily I didn't have them. I don't know how you get rid of fibroids though.......its really easy to check if you do have them, you could just have a scan internally? I had one a while ago to check the lining and it was fine, doesn't hurt.
I feel so shattered Dilly, I had such a bad night and am a mess today. Plus on the way to school this afternoon some little sweet girl walked past and said "that ladies got spots" .

Re: Endometrial Ablation
Fibroids can be seen on an external scan as long as your bladder is full. My dd had a scan for them last week and hers was done externally.
I had my ablation done with fibroids and it was fine. Did not have major pain after, even though I had a sterilization at the same time. Don't know why she said what she did about increasing the risk, I was told i had to have one to ensure i could not get pregnant again otherwise they would not do the ablation.
Good luck and thinking of you while you make your decision.

Re: Endometrial Ablation
I think that's normal to have the fibroid check. It's another thing that can cause heavy bleeding so they need to eliminate that. I had an internal and external scan if I recall correctly.
The surgery for the ablation is nothing to worry about honestly. You'll get horror stories about eating bubble gum or walking on gravel if you google enough!!
My only concerns are always only about the effects of anaesthetic. Other than that it's a simple procedure. Have had no pain whatsoever since having it done. I guess you have to weight up the pros and cons. My periods were so heavy I was left exhausted for a week each month and bled so heavily I was scared of leaking on my clothes so stopped going out that week. It feels like I've got my life back in a lot of ways. So definitely worth it and can't believe I used to suffer like I did when I don't give my period a second thought now and can just use liners.

Re: Endometrial Ablation
Katz - she said that sterilisation increased the risk as they were inserting something into your belly button and off to the side, so more risk of infection there and puncturing into the bowel, urethra etc etc. She also said that sterilisation is not 100% safe and still a 1 in 200 chance of getting pregnant.
Bettie - thanks hon. I'm still worried about it and don't know what to do but there really are no great alternatives. Like you I'm shattered, and its for more than a week after. I'm not at all bothered about having a GA though! What contraception do you use, were you sterilised?
What petrifies me most is getting pregnant after as thats a big no and can be very dangerous. I've only been pregnant once though so hopefully I could manage not to!

Re: Endometrial Ablation
Still mulling this over, wish there was an easy way to make the decision. I'm due on at the moment and when I have a period I definitely want to go ahead!
Betty - sorry to be nosey but were you sterilised? Its more the aspect of getting pregnant by mistake that worries me.
Anyone else who's had one?

Re: Endometrial Ablation
Yes I was sterilised at the same time Rosey. I was 39 with five kids so they were ok to do that too although I still had to persuade the doctor first before she would consent. I don't understand that because you can't carry a child once you've had ablation but can still get pregnant so you think the two procedures would always go hand-in-hand. I had small stitches from the sterilisation by my belly button and top of my pubic hair line. Nothing major and very tiny scars now.

Re: Endometrial Ablation
Just to add, I was thinking the other day about how easy life is now. My period started whilst I was on holiday with my new man. Before, it would have been a MAJOR disaster but I didn't even have to go and buy tampons and just made do with a small piece of toilet paper!!

Re: Endometrial Ablation
That's brilliant Bettie! I've been thinking about it today and doing a bit more research and it seems its very bad news for mother and foetus if you get pregnant and although I'm sure I wouldn't, it must be safer with a sterilisation. Was there a longer recovery because of sterilisation? I'm guessing as you have stitches, that maybe you have to take it a bit easier?
