Re: Mystery explosion in the Midlands!
Oh, I think that's what we heard too (Gloucester). My daughter asked what the noise was and I said I thought it was the thunder back (we had a thunderstorm this afternoon!).
Now they are saying that a Typhoon jet was scrambled because they thought a small plane had been hijacked but it was the pilot transmitting on the wrong frequency! Don't know if that's right though.

Re: Mystery explosion in the Midlands!
Just been on the news. it was an RAF jet going to the aid of a helicopter, and it managed to break the sound barrier and create a sonic boom. Said it could be heard in Wilts also, but I didn't hear it. Miss everything!

I was walking outside in the field with the little fella and there was a boom-boom and the ground shook! He looked at me and said "do you think we should go back inside" and we rushed back to the house pronto!
It was pretty obvious from the double boom sound that it was a sonic boom like Concorde used to make but Birmingham Airport said it definitely wasn't and then the MoD confirmed it was
