The Hunger Games - has anyone seen/read it?

Dd1 has been invited to the cinema in a couple of weeks for her friend's birthdY.

Unless there are any objections, they're going to see The Hunger Games.

I know nothing about it, other than a couple of reviews I've read online and I'm a bit

    DD1 is 10, 11 in September.

She likes Sarah Jane Adventures, Dr Who, etc, so is not averse to a bit of violence but I'm not sure if this film is a little too much.

Has anyone seen the film/read the book? What did you think of it?

    Thanks!

Re: The Hunger Games - has anyone seen/read it?

I have read the books and seen the film. There are two bits in it that made the audience gasp/whimper. 1. I 14 year old boy gets his neck broken by another contestant and then Rue the little 12 year old girl gets killed.
But considering there are 22 deaths there is remarkably very little blood during the killings. The book is aimed at 11 year olds I think and the film is a 12 so it really depends on how happy you are for her to watch a 12.

Its not scary as such, its just more the subject matter can be a little freaky and dark.
Does she want to go and see it?

I read the books and loved them, although they were quite violent, haven't seen the movie yet. I think it would probably be on a par with a few of the more scary dr who's

Loving being mummy to the crazy whirlwind that is Toby

A lot has been cut form the film to make it 12A however I'm not sure I'd let a 10 year old see it TBH

She wants to go as her friends are going but I don't think she really cares what she watches. They're going to Pizza Hut and then having a sleepov
I thought the film was 12A which I thought meant under 12s had to be accompanied by an adult.

Her friends parents will be with them, and if any of us would rather they not see it, they'll go and see something else, but other than what I've read online (which I didn't really like the sound of), I don't know anything about it.

She loves Dr Who (and that can be quite dark and scary at times) and is not bothered about mild-ish/moderate-ish violence, but the subject matter feels a little old for her iyswim.

She also watched Avatar round a friends house and wasn't bothered by that

    Thanks!

TBH I think there is a high probability they will actually be bored. as its pretty long and the boys are not that cute in it

It doesn't sound like a jolly birthday treat sort of film to me to be honest.

I think they're at a bit of a cross-over age now, too old for the cartoony stuff of yore, but not old enough for the stuff they do want to watch.

I've become less strict with the age ratings for DD1 now if I'm honest, for example, Goonies is a 12, Pirates of the Caribbean is 12 but she was fine watching them and as long as I've seen them and know they're not too violent/sexual/sweary/whatever then I'll let her watch them

I found it a bit erie not the stuff of nightmares but bit creepy wouldn't of thought it would of been a thing for kids.
But I wouldn't say my children wouldn't be allowed to see it but I think it's adult concept more

I've seen a few reports of complaints about it not being suitable for younger kids but I haven't looked terribly closely because it looks like a pile of angsty teen dross and I've been subjected to more than enough of that having a Twilight fan in da house!

Twilight has never yet crossed my doorstep!

I don't fancy seeing it, I have enough trouble staying awake in cinemas as it is.

I don't think DD1's even heard of it
