Question on Apps for iPhone/iPad

We're getting the new iPad this week which I'm really excited about. Now this is probably going to seem like a stupid question but are apps different for iPhones compared to iPads? What I mean is do I have to purchase any apps again that I have on my iPhone if I want them on my iPad or are they compatible?

Some are compatible across both so when you add your iPad to iTunes and update they will be the iPad version on your iPad and stay as the phone on your iPhone. Facebook is one of these.

Some are just for your phone but still will work on iPad, they'll just be smaller.

I'm not sure about ones that have a separate iPad version though!

Thanks Holly I'll just see what transfers over when I connect the iPad.

DH and I are making sure we have a play with the iPad first otherwise once Jamie gets his hands on it there will be no chance for us!
