Re: Would you go camping with a 10 month old baby?

Yes. We took DD2 last year and she loved it. The first night was a bit difficult because I don't think she understood we were not going home but once she realised we were sleeping there she was fine. We had a double sleeping bag and she came in with us. We got her to sleep then sat with a bottle of wine and the ipod on. We took a heater with us as well.

Here she is taking over the bed xx

I wouldn't - neither of mine reliably slept through in strange places and I'd imagine they'd wake the whole campsite with screams. Now they're older we're planning a camping trip this summer and im really looking forward to it.

Taking a baby camping seems like adding an extra dimension to a very particular circle of hell to me but then I'm not a fan to start with

    PMSL january

My DS is doing a "trial" night at a local campsite with our 2yr3mth son, he's not been allowed to go before I am hoping they all get along swimmingly and go on lots of boys camping trips and leave mea in peace at home

DH keeps asking me to come saying its so easy and you don't have to do anything

Re: Would you go camping with a 10 month old baby?

Yes. But then I love camping so have found ways to continue doing something I love rather than going without.

DS was 11 months when we camped abroad for 3 weeks, and DD2 was about 8 months when we first took her. We have only ever used a pop up cot, or had them on self inflating mattresses, never bothered with a highchair etc (no room). The hardest things we have found is keeping them warm (as it is with anyone when you're camping), so lots of layers, change them into PJ's early on to give them a chance to warm up. We used a 1tog gro bag with a vango baby sleeping bag, this way when DD wriggled out she still had a layer. She was also in with us so I could keep her close for warmth. The other hard thing is when they are crawling but not walking as DS was. Then I would recommend an all-in-one waterproof thing over their clothes no matter what the weather is doing.

You also may need to think about your cooking facilties and safety- we keep the kitchen tuff in a couple of plastic boxes. We do take a few toys, but they usually don't get much of a look in. I find wet wipes a faff but pack a few flannels and give them a wash down if needed, or we use a folding bucket in the shower for a wash (any plastic bowl/box would work).

The good things- drinking wine, cooking food and chilling whilst all of the children play, or babies are asleep, fresh air gets them to sleep well*, the fact we can holiday for 3 weeks for the price on 1, we get our Ray Mears experience.... ooooh I can't wait!

    *first night excluded,
Been busy and got the start of a big clear out on ebay. Please take a look - it's like an Aladdin's cave!

Re: Would you go camping with a 10 month old baby?

No I wouldn't. Things that would worry me would be (a) keeping them warm at night (b) the sunlight in the morning waking them up at stupid o'clock (c) it being too bright at bedtime for them to sleep (d) it being too warm, I've been camping several times in roasting weather and it has been so stuffy in the tent (e) noise from the campsite in the evening when I would want the 10-month-old to be sleeping!

I'm sure there are many other things I could add to my list

Absolutely. We've always done camping holidays. The kids all love it and so do we!

Jemimah's first camping trip was at 2 months old when we did our massive month and a half road trip to Queensland. It was amazing!

Eta - we've been camping in the spring with babies, when it gets pretty chilly at night. Then, we just get a powered site and take a heater but normally we're unpowered bush campers! (have a mahooosive battery for the camp fridge, but that's all) ooooh! I'm getting all excited about camping now!

I went camping when my eldest son was 11 months old. I couldn't be bothered with powdered formula so I just took a carton of formula per day and gave him cow's milk for other feeds. He wasn't a big milk drinker though. I used sippy cups instead of bottles and took some Milton tablets to keep them clean. Everything else was easy to deal with.

It really wasn't that bad. He went to sleep in a travel cot with a baby sleeping bag and blankets and slept through fine.

I am not a rough-camper by any means though.

I also heartily dislike camping, by the way, but finances have dictated that that's how I travel.

Both my children absolutely love it. *sob*
