It would cost about a fiver to go along to a class, join, have the whole thing explained to you by an expert, take the books home, and never go back if you don't want to. Assuming you can join when there is no joining fee, which happens a lot.

Also bear in mind that the more generous your portion the more likely your loss is to stall (from the experience of people in the class I went to).
Eating huge amounts of pasta at a sitting won't help. You need to stop eating when full.
I do agree with DDB though, get to a class for the books and explanation and you don't have to go back.

Re: Slimming world - can anyone explain it to me?
I found this forum http://www.minimins.com/slimming-world/ very useful when I was doing SW. I had my Mum's old books and was just doing it myself at home and managed to find loads of good recipes, tips and syn values on there.
Clowe there are some starter packs here - they brought out new books in January, the old ones work perfectly well but they have made a few tweaks (changed syn values for some foods, changed the amount of cereal you can have, etc) so it's up to yourself whether you want the newest version or the previous ones.

I have an old book if you would like it. It's about 10 months old so shouldn't be too out of date, pm me if you'd like it x
