NHSP have sent me all the online training to do now, which is like teaching me suck eggs and a waste of time if I don't do that job.

Just some ponderings- I think there is a big difference between feeling that you are not seeing your children enough and doing something that you don't enjoy (midwife training) and feeling that you are not seeing them and doing something you enjoy and get something from, either now or the future (job 1).

The other thing is that I think from what you've written, if you did take up job 1 and found it didn't work out, it sounds as if you could then get job 2 at a later point, but not so easily the other way round.

With the changes that will be made to tax credits will you definitely be better off working fewer hours?

Silverpod makes a good point in her second paragraph.

Very good point silverpod, I hadn't thought of that.

I have no idea how tax credits will affect me, where can I find out?

Why not phone round some childminders and make enquiries. Find out if there is anyone with vacancies local to you (since you have one car) and find out what they would charge. Try asking at the school your children attend. My school allows me to leave my business cards in reception. Finding out if you have appropriate/affordable childcare or not might make the decision for you.

NHSP's are always taking on so you could try the first job and if it doesn't work out then you will be able to get a bank position any time. (I have absolutely no doubt you will be taken on by NHSP's!)

Just been offered job 1, after they initially turned me down.
They said they wanted to keep my application though as they liked me, and then called me this morning to offer me a temp job for 6 months. I'm very happy about this, especially as I just had to start signing on. Still going to try for job 2 as well though as we were hoping to relocate back to Sheffield this summer and that would be perfect. I can commute from Sheffield to Manchester for a few weeks/months i'm sure. Very happy though, was beginning to feel very deflated and unemployable :)

Well done you. I'm sure you'll get loads out of it.

See what they say about hours when you actually start the job: you may find they are able to be a leetle bit flexible depending on who you are with and in what sessions. So you may find - for instance - that though the contracted hours are 8:30 to 4, there is 1 day you aren't actually with students after 3 and they may let you go home early that day if you work extra another day. It all depends on the timetabling. Our MH does a similar job at the upper end of DD1's school on Wednesday afternoons, and she gets to go home very slightly early on the understanding she gives DD1 a lift home with her!

Thats great news! Six months will give you a good chance to see how things work out with childcare and such like.
