Quick advice please - are duffle coats waterproof?

Strange question I know but I've spotted a lovely one for B in the M&S sale. The girls have never had one before and I haven't since I was a child so I have no idea So are they OK in all weathers? It will be for school next year so it will need to keep her dry in all weathers

No, usually they are made of wool or wool blend and Theo had one that wasn't waterproof in the slightest.
    Depends on the material.

Wool and polyester. Maybe not then!!! Damn, was a good price too

DD had an M&S (boys, as was a lot thicker than the girls version) and yes, totally weatherproof and water repellent.
    This too, shall pass

I've always worn them (got Gloverall at the moment) and most soak up water like a sponge. I suppose you could spray them with something?

M&S labels will usually tell you what to expect.

If it doesn't say "waterproof" and have taped seams as well then no coat is.

    Showerproof doesn't equal waterproof either.

Wool/wool blend coats of good quality will be pretty weatherproof - especially a dense "hairy" wool where he water can bead of the surface.

Get a duffle or similar for general use and a proper kagoule etc Peter storm type from a hiking/outdoorsy shop for wet weather . Miillets/blacks sales are often good for relatively checp ones.
