I'd be thinking about putting a backboard on it so that it's like a splashback and then you can add hooks or a hanging rail to hang utensils etc from, or just a shallow shelf to store things on. Just a piece of MDF or Ply would do it with a quick sand and a lick of paint. If you were feeling arty you could paint a window & view on it too and add curtains.

Ikea have some lovely pots/pans and oven gloves/tea towel sets.....
