06-05-2012, 07:51am #721Hey hun, the 10k training group I just did was 8 weeks long. They started with a 3.5km run and built from there. They all did the beginner course in Sept last year and have been running 30-40 mins regularly (ish) since then. Happy to send you the plan if ya like? The big difference between the 10k course and 5k one is that you need to run 3 times a week (as opposed to 2 on my beginners course) but you have 1 'long' run (which we pretty much added 1k to each week with a few repeats/slight increases) and 2 easy runs of 30-45 mind depending on which week you're on.

You have plenty of time but I would definitely check out a plan (there's a million available online) as the further you run, the more risk of injury so you want to avoid overtraining.
Good luck hun, great goal to aim for!
Chell, definitely second Caro's advice about strength. Even if you just do planks at home daily, you will notice a difference. I follow a guy on twitter called @chakabars who posts strength exercise on YouTube (search for chakabars homework I think). They are an amazing strength workout and you don't need any equipment etc. he's possibly an acquired taste? But I find him pretty inspiring, he's an ex army guy who's passionate about fitness/nutrition and people working out outside using whatever's around you (benches, railings etc) I do it in my bedroom tho

Brill thanks, I'm damselling while stretching now, lol. I will check him out later.
Just back home. I did 4.98km in just under 29mins. I tried to slow myself down so I could jog a distance. I managed the first 2.5km without stopping (11.5mins) then got a killer stitch. I walked/jogged on and off after that.
I realised looking at my last run that I averaged a km every 5.5min and that was a lot of walking. As I said, I walk fast. I decided today to try to slow myself down as much as I could and try to go for distance. It worked for the first 2.5k but once I got the stitch I couldn't shift it. I hadn't eaten, normally I run an hour after dinner so blame that.
It is gorgeous sunny morning here.DS July 2003, DD1 January 2005, DD2 August 2008

Re: The 2012 Running Thread!
Thanks honey
I am running 5K at least once a week (although am aiming to do a second one in 3 days tomorrow - on my 'flat' route i think
) and doing at least one shorter mid-week run where I am focusing on intervals to try and build up my speed a bit. I did do a 10K last year but, retrospectively, I was a little bit under-prepared and it was more of a struggle than it should have been (i.e. I ended up walking some of it
). That was partly because it was all on freshly cut grass though which meant I spent the whole run sneezing - should be ok in September as my hayfever will have cleared up. Am really looking forward to this 10K though as it is in London Zoo so I can see the animals as I run past (and the kids will enjoy watching
)
I might try and start increasing distance next week i think - was going to do it yesterday but the hilly route was hard work, so my the time I reached by 5K point I was ready to stop. The plan would be fab though - I should be able to run three times a week most weeks now DH isn't at football on Saturdays.Jedi Boy is 6, the Little Princess is 3....

Re: The 2012 Running Thread!
hi all!
We got back from our holiday yesterday and I've got my 10k later this morning
I think I'm ready (I did a couple of treadmill runs while we were away - too hot to run outside!) but the ground here is pretty soggy so I'm not sure if I will manage my under 60min goal.
I'll go and have a read back to see what I missed.

Strange, I can't reply from Tapatalk unless I quote someone.
Good luck for today Mrs D. You obviously weren't in the UK if it was too hot too run! Did you have a good holiday?
I couldn't be bothered running this morning but didn't want to waste the opportunity to go out. My knees were aching when I was lying in bed (they don't hurt when I actually run).
I only did 1.5 miles but am over the moon that I jogged the whole time. I planned to go a little further but decided to turn home and challenge myself to make it home without walking.

Re: The 2012 Running Thread!
Good luck today Mrs D
Looks like you had a fab holiday from your photos!
Well done for getting out for that run Chell
another 5k for me this morning, bit slower than Saturday but I am happy as it is the first time I have managed 2 5K runs so close together and I did an extra 3 minutes so probably closer to 5.5k.

1 hour 1 min 50 but man was it hard
hills, rain, mud but I'm very pleased I ran the whole way and actually even the time wasn't too bad really.

Re: The 2012 Running Thread!
Oh a week in the sun - how jealous am I
I finally got to run outside this morning - did a slow 10km as I did a pretty long interval session on the treadmill yesterday so didnt want to over do it today.
I am going to wind back on the intervals from next week and do shorter sessions but much faster with maybe just off walking for the recover section to see if I can improve my speed.
Fingers crossed it stays dry now
