WWYD? - I think teacher has kept DD's money, which isn't hers
I will try to keep it short and sweet.
On Friday, DD had non-uniform day at school to support C.I.Need. So that cost £1. We were also told via n/letter that cakes would be on sale for 25p each. So, I sent her in with a £1 coin, 20p and 5p coin in her bookbag and asked her to give her teacher the £1 coin and use the other 2 to buy a cake for herself.
Anyway, I collected her and on the way home, I asked if she had bought a nice cake. She started crying hysterically, and said no, she hadn't bought a cake. I checked her book bag, it was empty (no money left in there). I asked if she had given her teacher the money for C.I.N and she said she gave her teacher all the money (all 3 coins).
So I asked her whether there were any cakes, and if any of the other kids had any cakes. She said NO, but said that her teacher had told them that they could have cake later.
Now, she was really, really upset about this. If she had told me right away, I would have dealt with it right away on friday night. Now, I have to talk to her teacher about this on Monday pm.
I want to know where the 25p is, and I want it back if there is/was no cake. I am rather peed off to think that her teacher would be taking money off a 5 year old without giving her anything in return.
What would you do?

Our cake sale was after school if you were quick in picking her up could she of missed it?
The money was for charity and so the teacher could quite innocently thought it was for CIN or they were putting the money in a pot and she didn't see what she put in.
Endless senarios that could of happened.
I am sure the teacher will give you 25p back if you explain.

I think I'd mention conversationally with the teacher that DD was a bit upset that she didn't get a cake when she had brought her money.
I'm not sure I'd ask for the 25p back though.
Sounds like a misunderstanding though, I would imagine the teacher had thought the full amount was for CIN.

The silly thing is, it's not the money that concerns me. It's the fact that she was really, really upset that she didn't get cake. I want to talk to her teacher, because DD was so unhappy that I want DD to feel that I acknowledge her upset and want to get to the bottom of things.

Collecting money from a small number of children is a nightmare, especially when they don't understand money or know how much they have, so I can imagine it's beyond confusing to collect from a whole class!
Unless your daughter told the teacher she was upset not to get a cake, how was the teacher to know?

Just ask, explain about the cake and how upset she was. Im sure she will give you the 25p back.

At this age I would lie
I would tell her that you spoke to the teacher and that she just forgot to give her the cake but that when she realised she saved the best/prettiest/tastiest/most sprinkled cake just for her and then produce a very pretty cake that you've conveniently bought or made.
If she wasn't so upset then I would just tell her that sometimes silly things like this happen when people are very busy and that it wasn't done on purpose, but that you will get her a special cake to make up for it, and wasn't it nice that the charity will get the 25p as an extra present - this is probably what I'd do with Oscar. But as she's really upset I'd go with the above.xx Hermie xx
