My friend got me a piece of jewellry - it was an inexpensive piece but one I wear a lot.
I also got a magazine subscription which I continued once the year was up but it reminds me of her each time it comes even though I pay for it now. My friend got me Good Food Mag as I love to cook.

I like the Jo Malone candle idea for either age but I do think for a significant birthday you should give something that won't expire like perfume or a spa voucher.
