Re: boys hair / school law
Cymber - I don't think it is just a British thing, the rules here are actually stricter than the UK with regards to uniform etc and behaviour.
DS had longish hair, past his collar and beautifully orange and curly - and I had to cut it for school. He had the option to wear it tied up or cut it and he chose to cut it despite lots of tears. They are strict with the girls as well and they have to have their hair tied up for school and they will tell you to cut the fringes and if they are not done within 48 hours then the child is not admitted to the school and will be sent home whatever age they are.

My son went to a boys' grammar school for a year and they had this exact rule. They weren't really strict about it, though DS1 did once get asked to get his hair cut because it was getting too long. (It was way below his collar by then.)

Re: boys hair / school law
My school was very strict on uniform and frankly I quite enjoyed it - it was fun to try and find loop-holes in the rules or bend them just enough that I was an individual but also couldn't be given a straight-out detention. I think it taught me well in the long run ;)
At my school they would normally just tell the kid to fix their hair over the weekend and if they didn't they'd be put in isolation until they did. So I'd send your son in and see what they say.
