My first attempts at fondant icing

Don't know if this forum is still that active, but I'm going to show off my cupcake decorating skillz anyway.

I did a cupcake decorating workshop with a friend recently and really enjoyed it. It was all about the fondant, which is fine, as I'd never used it before (I am a fan of butter cream or cream cheese icing). Not only did we discover that lemon curd is available over here, but I found out that fondant icing is more or less like edible polymer clay. Kind of. Anyway, here are some of the cakes I decorated:

A couple of the cakes have little 'dents' in the centre - that's from the filling, which was jam or lemon curd.

We were also shown how to make a bear and a pig from fondant, but my bear...well, let's just say we know who ate all the pies...

I really enjoyed the workshop, and although the cakes we decorated were made with packet mix (the woman who ran the workshop recommended the mix), they still tasted pretty good, although I suspect the lemon curd filling helped with that.

Lovely! The teddy bear seems like it would be tricky.

    Well done you!

I just adore the paisley indentation pattern on the turquoise one. Really unusual. Cupcakes seem to ever so everywhere now but I've never seen anything like that one

It was made using a plastic sheet. You rolled out the icing and then pressed the sheet into it. I couldn't get it to work evenly though, so I used the icing roller to gently press the sheet evenly.

I have some similar sheets for embossing with my Big Shot cutting machine - I wonder if I could put icing through that?

I love them, they look great.

Kitty I have seen a blog where the woman does use her crafting embossing folders and clean stamps - though perhaps not the Big Shot itself!

Shame. I already call it the Craft Mangle, it could double up as the Icing Press too.

They look yummy, and the lemon curd filling sounds heavenly.

I adore the slightly grumpy expression on the bears face

They look lovely. For the filling do you just cut out a bit of cake & fill.. and then ice over the top?

Sorry Becci, only just seen this. Yes, you use a tiny cutter to cut out a bit of the cake (you could use an apple corer, but only press down about 1/3 of the way), and then spoon in the jam or lemon curd.
