Are you certain it's an animal? I did start giggling imagining that it was your shoes hissing at you (you know how some do??).

Re: What could be hissing at me whan I'm gardening?
I'm sure frogs/toads can hiss
less likely to run away than a snake or cat...they wouldn't usually hiss unless cornered and confronted.

Just had a thought. Could it be an escape of water or gas?

Re: What could be hissing at me whan I'm gardening?
Thanks everyone. It's still in the area hissing today, but not all the time (OH went out there & now says I'm imagining it).
We back on to a road then there's a forest area/graveyard past the road so it won't be someone's irrigation/hose unless the sound is travelling strangely as it sounds like it's in the back bushes. There are a lot of trees/bushes & it's completely overgrown/wild in that part of the garden. I know we have lots of birds & I'm pretty sure at least the pigeons are nesting up there, so it could be birds I guess. I can't see any bees, but haven't beaten around the area with a stick to see if anything is fished out.
So still a mystery for now.
