A question about Disability living allowance and blue badge parking....

We've just had our DLA reviewed and still get middle rate for care needs and now get the low rate for mobility needs.
What rate do you need to automatically get a blue badge?
I know I can apply for one regardless but not sure how sucessful we'll be.
    Thanks

I think you need the higher rate, Peridot

It's worth applying for a badge anyway - getting a letter from a therapist/doctor/specialist will often help as well

It's definitely higher rate for Bristol city council - check your council's website for the form
DD is 9 and DS is 11

The DFT set the 'rules' and most council's abide by them. And the DFT say the higher rate is required. I do know people who have managed to get a blue badge despite not receiving the higher rate of the mobility component, though. I must admit I haven't tried, as I know it will be a fight and I feel like I am fighting on all fronts at the moment.

thanks Peridot and Dilly Dally, you have given me a kick up the a about getting this sorted. This is one form that has totally defeated me, and I was given the name of a lady who helps with forms. She is with Contact a Family - maybe there is someone in your area that can give advice about forms. I have also been told that the NAS has a helpline and can give advice about form filling - might be worth a try.

DS2 also gets middle rate care and low rate mobility and we were told we wouldn't be entitled to a blue badge.

Generally Higher. I've got a badge without getting Higher, but it was because DD1 was too young to get mobility at all, and we got a specific letter from her Paed saying we needed the badge. The sort of thing you'd typically get it for is eg if a young child needs oxygen in their wheelchair/buggy, in which case from a DLA pov they'd on lower but you obviously need the access of the wider space to handle the equipment etc.

Stepson has a blue badge. I have no idea what level of dla he's on, he's 13 with ASD, so no physical issues.

We've never needed it in 7 years We've asked to borrow it a couple of times for various proof of disability reasons, but ex won't lend it to us.

DS was on higher care and higher mobility and we got a blue badge, then the mobility dropped to the lower rate and the blue badge wasn't renewed.

    Thanks for your advice :)
Dilly I hear you on the fighting thing, that's exactly how I feel!
My pead did mention it to me & about doing a letter for me last time she saw us as she thinks it is something Thomas needs being that he will happily jump straight out in front of a car at any given moment

Re: A question about Disability living allowance and blue badge parking....

We got one with ds being too young to apply for mobility component and got a letter that we had to take to a gp. All she wrote was that "ds has Down's Syndrome and cannot yet walk" and we got it with no problem.

I think it's definitely worth sending the form in as ours was difficult to fill in and a gp appointment isn't too much a hassle if they know your child and you never know! Mine is a godsend, it means we can park outside his school (only two parking spaces ) and our doctors has just turned over half their carpark into disabled spaces! Although I do think it's made ds a little lazy and we've started pushing his walking more to build up his muscles!
