    SPD & Chiropractors

My SPD is getting bad and I've decided to book in with a chiropracter and the appointment is next week.

What exactly do they do? I've read a thread about bone crunching sounds painful!

Does anyone recommend it and is it worth it?

    TIA

    Re: SPD & Chiropractors

I saw one in both my last pg's, she was recommended to me by my midwife and was actually a qualified MW herself too! She never really did any 'bone crunching' stuff, it was all very small movements/adjustments but it definitely helped with my SPD. I'm going to make an appointment with her again this week actually....I would highly recommend chiropractic treatment to anyone with any pg-related back/pelvis issues.

Hi, I have had really bad SPD both pg's. I saw an osteopath during the first which was good but what really helped second time round was acupuncture.. really helped..

    Re: SPD & Chiropractors

I had chronic spd (was on crutches for 3 months and confined to the bed for most of the last month on painkillers), and while I saw the physio in the hospital, I was never advised to see an osteopath. I have spoken to somebody else who suffered since and she had it on two of her three pregnancies and actually swore by actupuncture the second time, so I think that if i'm lucky enough to go again that I might try it.

You have my sympathies, it is agonising pain

I was actually told off by the NHS physio. for going to the chiropractor. She was truly shocked, and informed me that it was extremely dangerous...I hadn't even considered that the 2 disciplines were such poles apart! I discussed her reaction with my chiropractor and she actually arranged some meetings between the NHS and her practice, and apparently the relationship has improved in our area!

    Re: SPD & Chiropractors

Aw thanks ladies. I went for a meeting with the Chiropracter this morning and she told me what she could do. None of the bone crunching that I had read about

I'm going for treatment on Thursday morning but if this doesn't work I will definitely try the acupuncture. She did ask what the NHS have done for me so far and I explained that I had been given a tubi grip. When I showed her she laughed, and said she didn't think that would help me at all.

When I went to the NHS physio she said she hadn't heard anything about women with SPD using Chiropracters but this was the same physio that told me to use a birthing ball when the last physio and midwife told me definitely not to use one. Sometimes it's hard to know who's right and who's wrong sometimes.

Thanks for the advice much appreciated.

if it helps, I was told to steer clear of the birthing ball - we're already so loosened up in the joints we could actually do damage if we used it.

I had my hips strapped up with the big velcro/elastic strap the whole time - is that what you have?

p.s. are you doing everthing as you should movement-wise? keeping your legs together, full length pillow between your legs at night etc? all the stuff to keep the strain from your hip joints

I wondered that about the birthing ball and I agree with you. I'm not comfortable with using one.

I have got a maternity belt with velcro, I have to take it with me on Thursday when I go. I find it helps a little.

I'm doing everything I can with the exercises and keeping legs together etc. The main thing I struggle with is the stairs and getting in and out of the car.
