Re: What happens to car ownership/insurance when someone dies? Red?

Could you put yourself on the insurance as a named driver? Even if you won't be driving it, at least it'll be covered til it's sold. I don't think you can SORN a vehicle that's kept on the road, sorry hon.

The motorhome you can declare as SORN, and presumably in a lock-up it's fairly secure.

She'll need cover for 'Fire and Theft', the insurance company should be able to help her. It might be worth asking Red Panda, she used to work in motor insurance.

Well, it's a funny one and will depend on your insurance co. I think Fire and Theft is if you are off-road (ie locked garage) and I don't know if they will register her as 3rd party, Fire and Theft without a licence. If they won't then I guess register it in your name. If it were a company car, you'd still have an insurance policy in your name, wouldn't you? So you don't have to own a car to insure it.

You will need to ring insurance company asap as its invalid since his death - but they can transfe the insurance (if already paid up) or cancel a policy thats on monthly payments

It took us 5 mins on phone and they just transferred it all to my mums name

I am asking the insurance expert in the household and will get back to you... (30+ years in commercial insurance including a lot of car insurance...)

The main problem is that none of us drive.

Phone the insurance co up (speculatively) and ask them if it can be transferred to someone without a licence. Tho logically I don't see why you can't just get a friend who can drive to insure it for you? The only reason it would need to be a driver is that the policies are cookie-cutter ones so a 3rd party one would cover you for driving, even if you swear blind to them you won't drive it. Hence you're best off getting an experienced driver to put themselves down as first driver on the policy as the risk (and thus the cost) will be calculated based on their no-claims etc.

Would your mother want to keep the car and learn to drive? Or would she want to sell it? Or doesn't she want to think that far?

Oh, I didn't realise that Pancs can't drive either (is that right?).

If Pancs can drive, Mr S says that the car itself (and the camper) will be transferred in ownership to her mum but if Pancs gets on the policy as a named driver she can transfer the insurance.

SORN seems like the way to go for the camper (you could even do that now). I don't think there's any problem with a non-driver being an owner (e.g. daft beggars who buy their children cars for their 17th birthdays) but they can't be the driver on the insurance. You can have insurance on a car you don't own though, they just need to see proof that the car IS insured not that the owner and insurer are the same person (as others have said with company cars).

Is there anyone else who could be named driver now, and insurance holder later, just temporarily?

Pancs - are you thinking of longer term solutions or short term ones? Because if both are to be sold in the short-ish term, perhaps you could ask the motorhome storage people if you could keep the car there too and declare them both as SORN. Then you wouldn't actually need insurance on either, but if they were stolen (which I'm coming to discover is a heck of a problem with motorhomes) you'd obviously have no cover.
