Can you make man-made material waterproof?

What I mean by that is can I buy some gorgeous Blowfish boots from Next that are made from 'other materials' and spray some stuff on them that will make them waterproof and keep my feet dry on the school run, or can you only spray leather?

I know that you can buy waterproofing spray for tents. I would be a bit nervous about spraying lovely new boots though.

I bought some Fabsil (the waterproofing spray for tents) after reading about it on here. So far I've used it on fake-suede boots a jacket and it's brilliant! I'm going to use it on my bigger winter coat so I'll finally have a suitable coat that's both warm and waterproof

I second the waterproofing spray for tents. You can also get a waterproof spray for Ugg Boots that might work-it might be more expensive than the tent stuff through.

So if I buy some tent spray and buy the lovely lovely boots, my husband wont go absolutely bonkers in 6 months time when I have, or dont have, soaking wet feet on the school run?!
