    wall mounting tv

We've decided to stop pretending that the focal point in our living room is anything other than the tv and want to wall mount it over the fire place. I want to get someone in while DH assures me it will be a doddle for him to do. What are your experiences? Having just been quoted over £200 to get someone in I'm tempted to let him do it but still very nervous in case it all goes wrong.

I'd be tempted to pay someone because I couldn't erase the visions of that Curry's ad where the bloke who's just DIY'd it starts doing aerobics and it falls off the wall although I'd choke at £200.

Can you get a couple more quotes?

    Re: wall mounting tv

We have a wall mounted TV in the family room, and got a telly man in to do it. Now, he would say this (or he'd be doing himself out of a job), but he reckoned that they have to be drilled properly into an outside wall, and the screws (or whatever they use, I dunno really) need to be long enough to go through the cavity and into the other wall, and this is the prime mistake people make.

He also said that some brackets are better than others - when we bought our telly in JL we also bought a bracket and he said it was totally not suitable for purpose and the one he brought with him was much more sturdy and looked like it'd hold the telly.

He charged me £100 ish for the bracket and £50 for putting it up.

Looking at him doing it, there's no way my DH could have done it (but then again we practically have a standing order for a handyman )

OH did ours - it was a pretty simple job but you do need to make sure you have a suitable bracket for your TV (they will state the weight/size that they are suitable for) and it is very important to make sure you have the right fixings for your walls. The brackets can be quite expensive, ours was about £40, and the wall fixings were £10ish too.

If you don't want to attempt it why not get the bracket and then it should take less than an hour to fit so consider what you are prepared to pay for a call out/hourly rate.

We had an aerial man in to mount ours, mostly because like Kate, if my OH had done it there is no way it would not have fallen off the wall!!

I think we paid about £120 xxx

    Re: wall mounting tv

If the £200 includes a bracket, then I htink that's a decent price - our brackets were about £100 alone. DH did fit them but we had to drill, fill a cavity, then screw the brackets to the filler which is quite a faff if you don't know what you're doing. It's not as simple as it seems, so unless your OH is good at DIY then I'd pay for it to be done.

As long as you a) have the right brackets, nice and sturdy and correct weight and b) dril deep enough with the proper fixings you should be ok to do it yourself, though personally if it's £200 for bracket and fitting I would have them do it.

OH did ours in the bedroom, it's one of those 'can be turned around to any angle' type one, said the bracket was expensive but intallation was easy.
If you don't need adjustable one then it would be cheaper.

DH did ours (approx 4/5 times) due to house move's and it's been fine Just make sure you have the proper fixings.
