    Lia's home birth

At 41+3 I was getting a little worried that i would not be able to have the home birth I wanted. I had not been able to have one with DS2 as I developed gestational diabetes but all had been well in this pregnancy.

I was booked in to be induced at 41+5 so was trying everything - both boys were early so going overdue was a new experience.

I walked to pick DS1 up from school, made the boys tea, put them to bed and then made DH and my tea.

About 9.15pm I thought I would go and lie down as had a bit of backache. At 10.15pm I came back downstairs and said to DH that it might be starting. I phoned the hospital at 10.30pm - didnt get through for about 5 minutes and although my contractions had been mild when I started to phone by the time I got through they were coming faster. I explained that I was having a home birth and the birth of DS2 had been very quick - 1 hour. They said the midwife would call me. I also called my sister to come down as she is about an hour away and would need to stay with the boys in case I had to go to hospital.

She called about 10.45pm and said she and the other midwife were on their way. They arrived at 11.05pm, at which time i was hanging from the door handle as the contractions were coming very close together. They said they needed to examine me and I asked if I could have some gas and air. They looked at each other and said they would need to go back to the hospital to get some as they hadnt brought any with them. At this point I knew there would not be enough time.

I managed to get on the floor and they monitored baby's heartbeat and were concerned as it was quite low. They decided to examine me and when she did I was fully dilated and my waters broke all over her. At this point it became a bit worrying as she was shouting at me to push as the baby was in distress, she and the other midwife were discussing if they needed to get an ambulance and my husband had phoned 999 and was asking the midwives if they wanted an ambulance. They decided that they didnt as long as the baby came quickly so I pushed with all my might and out she came with the cord around her neck. She was born at 11.32pm on 17th May.

I wasnt really aware of the issues but I know my DH had been quite worried. It meant that he was not able to cut the cord but all was ok so that was all that really mattered.

My sister arrived just before 12am, the midwives tided up and wrote the birth up and left by 1am. We all went to bed at about 2am.

Neither of the boys woke up so when they woke up in the morning they were very surprised to meet her.

It was a very very positive experience and so wonderful to go to sleep in my own bed.

Congratulations! And a lovely birth story too. What a lovely surprise for your boys. It sounds very like my little sister's birth. So much was happening so fast that they didn't have time to call anyone to look after me and then sort of forgot that I was there at all. I slept soundly through all of the commotion, and apparently my face was an absolute picture when I was brought into my parents' room in the morning and told to have a look in the cot!
