AR ASAP please, playschool related
Have just dropped DD off at playschool and two of the little girls were listening to an Ipod shuffle together

I cant understand WHY two 3 year olds have it in playschool? Firstly its bad for their ears, im guessing no one is monitoring how loud it is, whether the content is appropriate and also I bet they dont have 20 more to hand out to the other kids if they want a go?
Am I right to be annoyed about this? I feel like phoning them up and asking them what the hell is going on! One of the girls mum works at the playschool so her look out if she allows it, but itsnt that some sort of favouritism? and what about the other kids?
help!

Sounds a bit odd and not anything which would've been allowed at either of my children's preschools.
Surely they aren't allowed electronic stuff apart from the occasional supervised turn on the PC maybe?

That does sound odd.
Perhaps it was to keep her daughter quiet/entertained while they were setting up and then was going away when playschool started iyswim?

Re: AR ASAP please, playschool related
Yeah, I'm thinking what CB says - like times when I have handed my kids a random thing out of my handbag, a phone or something, as they have been rummaging and its a 'lets get this novelty over with thing' or a 'keep them quiet for five mins' thing?
I'd perhaps see whats going on when I return, maybe say something like you were a bit concerned that some of the kids had an ipod earlier and was worried someone may have left it out and perhaps its mislaid now? See what they say?

Re: AR ASAP please, playschool related
If the teachers/ keyworkers are aware I cant see what the problem is tbh. Obviously if they arent aware then thats another thing altogether.
Its entirely possible they were using it as a tool for the kids learning ( it could cover several areas of their learning and development but I wont bore you with what) and for all you know they may have been listening to nursery ryhmes/ stories on it. I know I have more bloody story cds and nursery rhyme ones on my ipod than grown up stuff
The kids love it!
If you are worried then of course you are entitled as a parent to ask the question and find out what they are using it for

Re: AR ASAP please, playschool related
But it was the daughters session at playschool still, and I wouldnt expect another child to be given it in view of the other children to keep them entertained. All the other kids were there.
I have phoned them cause im not happy but im guessing ive probably made things worse now! Its ICT week - wrongly labelled, I think electronic technology week would have been more suffice as its anything electronic including the ipod. Apparently because it was the girls mother whom supplied it, the contents will have been monitored...fair enough, but who was checking the volume...what if the other kids wanted to listen to it?
The big big problem for me now it that the girl and her mother are my friend
and I bet they will go and say to her "oh Clionas mum said this" like I was trying to stir trouble or something but I cant let that impair my parental descisionmaking can I?

I don't really see the problem with it tbh. If it was ICT week then I guess they are looking at examples of different forms of technology? DD1 listens to my ipod sometimes, I have the volume limited and surely it's no different to them watching a DVD on a portable player with headphones on?

Re: AR ASAP please, playschool related
sure your friend will be ok about it. You're a concerned mum thats all and Im sure she will respect that
Ipods are covered by ICT (which is a specific learning area in the EYFS so not really wrongly labelled at all. ICT covers a huge range of stuff, not just computers etc) and I guess they have used it as its something modern that most children will recognise from home. Could the volume have been locked to ensure a safe level? I know the older version could be, not sure about the current one

Re: AR ASAP please, playschool related
Thanks Golidlocks. I just walked in and thought it just looked abit wrong as its not something I would allow at home, only under my supervison and I mean sitting with her and showing her how to work it and deeming if its too loud or unsuitable etc.
Im guessing im going to be labelled the battle axe Mum at the school now
but its something I was unhappy with and wanted to know why. And Im still guessing they only had one so how would they promote fairness and making sure everyone had a go?
Am I being silly? I just know what kids are like for saying "no its miiine!" and if it did belong to one member, how the hell do they make them share it if they dont want to?
