Not hamsters- vile, evil creatures who shit their own body weight every day.
Not fish - they die .
We have an ancient cat , chickens and a horse. Horse wins easily every time!!! All the children groom and ride - hours of fun, no biting , lovely cuddles and they out live your children's living at home!!

I would say a guinea pig - kids love that they can 'talk' to them. They are also fairly low maintenance and they are that little big bigger so could be a bit more hardy.

I would go for the most low maintenance and I think a cat is probably the lowest!! LOL
Anything rodenty or wabbitty needs mucking out, obviously less than a horse which gets through more shoes then your kids so give those a miss!
You are more likely to get a neighbour to look after a cat then you are a rodent or dog!

I agree with Katkinn - my sister has two and her sons (3 & 6) are so lovely with them

A pair/family of guinea pigs or rats! Degus are lovely little creatures but very quick and not always happy to be picked up, but like attention nevertheless.
Both guineas and rats do prefer company of their own so you would need to get at least two (females tend to be better in pairs, with guineas you could have 1 male to 1 or a pair of females).
