We saw that video too! TBH I don't really remember it being about sex - more about bodily changes during puberty, difference between being a child and an adult physically etc (I DO remember them zooming in on the man's todger as it was getting bounced all over the place during the naked frisbee match ).

So not really *sex* education as such.

When I was at school we just had a period talk- no idea what the boys had.

However, the secondary school I work at now has girls attend that started having sex in year 6 so maybe a bit more detail is needed these days??

ITA! Also yr6 is too late really for the "changes stuff" Lots of girls start periods at 10-11 and need to know.

I would agree that the period talk should come earlier. In my daughters Year 6 class 4 out of 17 girls had already started their periods by the beginning of Year 6.

we do the a sex and relationships scheme called 'spiral curriculum'. we started off talking a lot about relationships between different people, puberty then got down to the actual event of sex. i didn't separate my g/b we talked about it all together and had some fantastic discussions, led by the children. they were genuinely inquisitive about it all, and asked really sensible and thoughtful questions- not just ones to make their mates laugh!
i can honestly say it was one of the most fun topics i ever taught, my year 6s were so grown up about it- we even had discussions about teen pregnancy and homosexuality! i answered the questions they asked, if i could, where they were appropriate.#
ask your child's teacher if you can have a look over the resources if you are at all concerned or just want to be one step ahead iyswim

I watched a new sex ed video at my kids school last year, they wanted the parents to watch it before the kids and it was hilarious!

It was two cartoon characters running round nekkid tickling each other with a feather before they got jiggy with it

There was a peice about getting pregnant but nothing about contraception or sexually transmitted diseases, it was just basically "in out shake it all about have a baby"

DS did come back and ask his dad if he tickles me with a feather

The sum total of our sex education at school was the Biology teacher passing round a Femidom telling us that that was what we all HAD to use.

Had to give DD a mini lesson tonight, she discovered the hole & asked what it was for & "Look Mummy! Is this where poo poo comes from? Can you see my dinner???" Erm, nooooooo, erm... OK you know when Aunty C had a really big tummy then went to the hospital & came back with Baby S & her tummy was flat again? Well..."

Yup i remember watching a video too, boys in one class and girls in another talking about periods

I'll never forget that video its haunted me for years, i remember a cartoon image of a young boy/man and it was saying how their voice gets deeper, he says "Hellllllllllloooooooooooo" in a high pitched Mickey Mouse style voice and then again in the deepest voice i've ever heard, we were wetting ourselves with laughter

My only memory of sex ed (I went to an all girls' school) was a school health nurse coming into school to talk about periods, showing us a tampon and dunking it in her glass of water to demonstrate it expanding, then removing and merrily carrying on drinking the water It was an unused tampon, but still

Oh and then we had a talk about contraception the week before we took our GCSEs (so most of us were 16). That was the sum total of sex ed at my school

In year 6 at our church school, we had a nearly retired teacher who wanted us to learn PROPERLY. So our PSHE lessons started off with learning about personal hygiene and cleaning ourselves. Progressed to acne. (She described in great detail the spot she squeezed that morning) Then puberty. (Think we watched the nekkid family video) We had the school nurse doing a talk with girls, then boys. We got to go and sit on the school field and chat to the nurse which was a great treat! Then we watched a video about pregnancy. This started off with two grown ups having "intercourse" pretty much like a porn video (although she fast forwarded through that) then we got to see the baby grown inside the stomach. Then watched a real birth. Blood and all! Tramatised us!!!
