Is there a difference between a "cupcake case" and a "muffin case"?

I'm just looking here to get some more cases for my "Big Cake Sale" at work to raise money for Camille's Appeal and I'm stumped as to what to buy!!

I was going to make muffins AND cupcakes but didn't know if I could use the same cases for both?!? I hope I can because there are some lovely Christmas cupcake cases and less choice of muffin ones!!!

    Any help much appreciated!!

Proper cupcake cases are normally smaller than muffin cases but now that the whole cupcake thing has taken off so amazingly I would imagine they make them bigger than the traditional fairy cake size. I reckon go with what you like - and what a kind thing to be doing

Hmmm, yeah I was thinking of making the cupcakes BIG like the posh ones in the shops, rather than the traditional little ones - that would probably be muffin case size I suppose??

A proper cupcake is in a muffin case......the smaller cases are fairy cake cases, and not technically a cupcake as far as I'm concerned

Thanks SS! I know this is a proper geeky question, but what height would you say a muffin case is? The ones I'm looking at are saying 38mm - to me thats still pretty small no?

Any suggestions for good websites to buy from would also be welcome! x

    That height is perfect

There's loads to choose from here, but I would stay away from the polka dot ones. They look lovely, but the paper is too thick so peels away when the cakes are cooked, and it smells funny too Some of the other patterned once could be the same.

Foil ones work really well and the cakes cook nicely in them.

ETA: If you're looking for plain white ones, the Dr Oetker white muffin cases that you can get in the supermarket are the perfect size.

WSS already, I'd add that ASDA do a great pack of own brand white & brown muffin cases. They're not at all flimsy and I've never had a problem with them peeling away. I stock up whenever I'm near as they sell out all the time!

Would second the metallic ones too.

How dull, I'm going to agree with SS and Shorty

I always use the metallic ones and they're great, and I've used the Asda ones in the past and they cooked really well in them.
