    Dublin on the cheap?

Have heard that it's not the cheapest place to eat and drink, so any tips please? Drink in particular!

What kind of thing are you after........traditional Irish stuff or posh bars etc?

What area are you staying in?

We went last month, and I was at the prices. Drink especially, since surely Guiness is piped in direct?

Was in Ireland at the weekend and it is PHENOMENALLY expensive - especially for drinks! Some of this is to do with the exchange rate - most drinks were at least 5 euros and some were more...given that the pound and euro are almost equivalent this is super expensive (and this was down the country outside Dublin)! Sorry - thats not very helpful!

SS - we're staying the the Belvedere, Parnell Square (as recomended by Annie G) and aren't into flash bars, we're more pub/bistro type people.

Am assuming it's cheaper to drink in pubs not in the centre?

It's worth bearing in mind with drinks, that for spirits and I think wines too, our measures are bigger than UK measures, so you're getting more for your money!

I think it's hard to recommend what I would consider to be 'cheap' because maybe we're used to higher prices here. I'm often really taken aback at what people on here consider to be expensive for some stuff iyswim?

I was in N Ireland at the weekend and nearly fell over to pay 'London' prices in Derry . It was for doubles though but even so...

We went to a nice Tapas place in Dublim which was pretty reasonable. I guess just avoid the too 'touristy' places.

Sorry crossed posts! Have just looked up that hotel, not 100% sure where it is, but I wouldn't recommend the immediate vicinity for going out.

Firstly (and I always say this ) avoid Temple Bar - this is where you will pay mad prices, even more so than the rest of Dublin, and it is tacky, dirty, and not representative of Dublin.

I'll have a think of some good places for you.....brain not totally functioning now, and I'm off to bed! Will post back tomorrow

You shoulda said you were in town. We could have met up!!!
The measures are much bigger here - but the costs of mixers are more. It is a bit of a rip off!

The Belvedere does (or at least did) decent pub grub in the bar and it was quite reasonable from what I remember.
You can walk the short distance to O'Connell Street where there are a vast range of fast food places and small Eurospars etc if you just want to grab a sandwich etc for lunch.
We went to a lovely Italian for dinner close to Stephen's Green - must try and find out the name - for dinner. It was also quite reasonable.
But yes, the price of food and drink is shocking. I paid 6 Euro for a GLASS of wine at Bewley's Hotel two weeks ago.

That said, if you are shopping etc there are loads of places you can grab a sandwich etc during the day for a decent enough price.

Are you planning to leave the city centre at all? There are some lovely eateries in the burbs - Malahide for example is brimming with yummy places to eat but I'm not sure how easy it would be to get to from the city centre.
