Anyone gone from no exercising to lot's?
Just wondering if anyone has gone from being like me, never exercised to exercising regularly.
To quote Jo Brand "my favourite hobby is sitting down" but I was quite tomboyish when I was pre 10 and was very active, then as soon as I hit the self concious stage I just stopped, always had a note for PE
, been the gym about 3 times in my life.
I've never been into sports (netball, tennis, etc) as I'm just not competative and I'm quite clumsy.
I'd love to be one of those people that loves exercising, but can't help thinking those people are naturally that way?
I think i'm still in the too self concious stage too, do you just get over that when you start going?

Re: Anyone gone from no exercising to lot's?
Are you exercising to lose weight, get fit, or both?
I know as soon as I start losing weight that it really spurred me on, and I used to look forward to going
Once you start feeling fitter it also spurs you on
It is just hard to get that motivation to start off with, especially if you are quite self conscious.
If you're clumsy, why don't you try swimming, or cycling, gym stuff, rather than step or aerobic classes you know?
Go for it!
ETA - I have posted on a couple of gym threads today.....I am now motivated myself and will be getting my a into g too, so yay!

Re: Anyone gone from no exercising to lot's?
Me

I hated PE at school . I had legs like tree trunks and was quite big at age 15. I was always the one that got picked last for team games
I have very bad memories of wearing those Knicker short things and my legs were huge and the lads would all laugh at me . At age 13 I was like a rake then bang I ballooned. Little did I know I had a rare hormone tumour thingy. It made me balloon up .Everyweek I did my upmost to get my parents to write letters to school to bunk off PE .
Then I left school got married ,got diagnosed lost weight, and turned into the biggest excersise junky you could ever meet . When I was working shifts and I had 10 days off in a row every month .I would do circuits in the evening or go for a run this was after going to the gym in the morning . Or I would do a 25-30 bike ride then go to body pump in the evenings. I was addicted and hated my husband
I ended up with lots of injurys
These days I can hardly get to the gym so I cancelled it . I have just bought across trainer but I try to be sensible these days . I would love to do more but TBH these days I have ironing and cleaning to do LOL .

Re: Anyone gone from no exercising to lot's?
Me too.
I spent most of my time at school skiving off PE, forging a note from my parents
or when I was a bit older picking the really easy option like country dancing
I suddenly got really into going to the gym when I lived in the States as a nanny and when I dropped the kids off at school in the morning I had quite alot of time on my hands so would spend a couple of hours in the gym.
Since then my exercise has been very much stop and start b'cos I've been really unwell with arthritis and have been out of action for months at a time. But now I'm back on a great drugs regime I go to the gym around 4-5 times a week and I totally LOVE it.
I really think you can become one of those people who loves to exercise. Book yourself in with a trainer who will take you round the gym and show you how all the equipment works and what you should aim at doing, and make sure he or she knows that you've not exercised for a while. Then as you build it up you may find that you'd like to participate in classes. My two favourite classes are Spin and Body Conditioning, both of which I feel really push me and I can be in and out within 45 mins, knowing that I've worked really hard.

Re: Anyone gone from no exercising to lot's?
I've been through a few phases - I was sporty at school and uni then didn't do anything for years.
When I started back at the gym years ago I could just about manage to run for 2 minutes and I was so unfit. I stuck with it and got up to being able to run a 10k (an impossible thought a year earlier!) It all went to pot a bit through pregnancies and babies and I was just getting back into the gym groove when my appendix burst the other week.
As soon as I'm able to I'll be back in the gym and I'd really like to build up to being able to run another 10k later this year.
Good luck!

Re: Anyone gone from no exercising to lot's?
I'm pretty uncoordinated and hated sports and anything active at school. However, I really found I enjoy swimming and cycling as an adult, and found once I get in a routine - for example, I swim as much as I can first thing before work - it spurs me on to keep going because I feel and see the difference.
If I don't go for morning swims, I often feel tired and sluggish - really wakes me up.

I was the 'sit at the back, got a note to get out of gym' kid - But I think it was the team aspect I hated.
Now I run miles and miles every week and LOVE it
- seriously good for the waistline, the headf*ck and lots of other stuff too - try it!!

Re: Anyone gone from no exercising to lot's?
Another one here who loathed PE at school. When I left, I realised that I don't like team sport, so I don't do it, I don't like ball games (tennis etc) so I don't do them, and I hate, loathe and detest running (sorry guinness
) so I don't do it.
But I love, love, LOVE
aerobics, body conditioning, free weights, yoga and Pilates, so I do them
I'm pretty fit now, and never do anything (fitness-wise) that I hate

Re: Anyone gone from no exercising to lot's?
I hated sports at school too, but I exercise now. It's a case of finding something you actually like doing. For me, it's pilates, walking, swimming and snowboarding, although the latter I do in intensive bursts of a couple of weeks in the winter, and then the odd stint at one of the indoor snow-slopes.
Exercise doesn't have to be on a treadmill in a gym

Re: Anyone gone from no exercising to lot's?
Thanks everyone, I'm really glad I started this thread now.
I'm just trying to think about what I have enjoyed doing. I loved the rowing and the running machines at the gym (when I went 3 times
)
Guinness, I like the idea of running do you start slowly and build up?
Lexie, I do want to lose weight at the moment but I'm wanting to get fit and stay fit too, I want to be more active, have more energy, I also want the girls to grow up being active and seeing me being active.
I just think active/fit people are happier and more confident -maybe that total rubbish though?
Chickpea, thats a great idea to book in to see a trainer can you do that without signing up for membership?
