Pros and cons of hard floors in bedrooms

    As opposed to carpet

DH has been utterly dead set against it and wants carpet in the bedrooms.

I absolutely agree that carpet has a nicer feel under bare feet but as far as I can see that's the only pro And can be easily remedied by wearing a pair of slippers!

I'm sure there are lots of other cons to having hard floors and I'm being obtuse (nothing new there then ) but as far as I can see there are a lot more pros.

Anyone care to share their experiences?

We've just had Quickstep put on our landing today (Which DH was also dead set against) and it looks utterly great (and he agrees and so I've spotted a chink in his carpet armour and fully intend to exploit it!!) and I would love it in the bedrooms as well.

    Thanks for any pointers.

Falling out of bed hurts more
    Dust under the bed=nightmare
    feels less "luxurious"

Pros - in kids bedrooms its easy to clean up sick.
Can be cosy with the addition of rugs.
    Looks good.
Cons - dust balls under the bed,
    bit cold underfoot
sweeping AND mopping (vs. just vacuuming).

I have wooden floors throughout and I've never thought about it. I have had no hard floor related incidents (apart from when cleaner was using mr sheen to clean it ) and looks cracking. I have nice slippers

We've got quick step in our bedroom with a couple of rugs to soften the look and make it slightly more cosy underfoot.

From a very practical point of view it is more durable and avoids any stained carpet accidents. It is also loads easier to clean and imho probably more hygienic as all the dust etc does not settle into the carpet, especially good if you are prone to dust allergies and the like, though thinking about it not sure that is going to swing it with your DH!

Err- if you dtd on the floor instead of the bed its uncomfy and you lose traction

Put rugs by the bed and that solves the main con...

I loved my hard floors in the last house (sanded floorboards), much prefer to carpet. So much easier to keep clean

I suppose it's less comfy for the children to play, but again rugs, which can be rolled up to play trains

PP I get loads of dust under the bed with carpets, with the disadvantage I can't just sweep it out...

DH has just gone to say goodnight to Emma - I think soundproofing is an issue in her room, but not sure of the quality of the laminate in there. (Hers is laminate, the rest carpet)

I was going to say noise and temperature. Hard floors are noisier and colder.

TBH I love hard floors for the living areas but prefer carpet in the bedroom. I love being cosy and snug!

We have Quickstep flooring in all the bedrooms. If you have the proper underlay beneath it then it isn't too cold or noisy.

I'd hate to have to clean up sick from a carpet, hard flooring is much easier.

I like the muffled-ness of carpeted bedrooms, they feel cosier.

I'm considering it for when we move, for our room anyway. We currently have a gorgeous v deep pile cream carpet. It looked lovely in the showroom and feels so soft underfoot, but it constantly looks a frigging mess because the (black) sock fluff that collects between DH's toes gets walked into the pile at night and it's a nightmare to hoover out

I'm not sure for the LOs rooms, though I'm swayed by the vomit argument so it could be a winner with a machine washable rug

Ah, see I'm the opposite - cleaning sick off a carpet is infinitely easier (it's all in one place) than off a hard floor (it sprays EVERYWHERE, usually across the entire room AND up the walls ). I love carpet. Warm, cosy, easy to clean and care for, if you get a high wool % it lasts forever (literally - my parents are still using the carpet they bought when they first got married, 38yrs ago, it just won't wear out ). Deaden noise, comfy to sit/lie/play on, dust and dirt sticks and stays put until you vacuum it off rather than flying around (including away from the broom!). We have wood in our hallway (original parquet floor) which I love to look at, but it's a total SOD to keep clean and tbh we've both said it'd be easier to carpet it - we won't, as it's part of the character of the house, but it would be easier!

Hard floors are easier to keep clean, more hygienic (we took up some old carpet and it was just ) and also its much better for allergies.

I don't mind area rugs but I'm not a fan of wall to wall carpeting.

Re: Pros and cons of hard floors in bedrooms

I def prefer hard floors everywhere in the house, a million times cleaner. Saying they're harder to keep clean just means that the carpet is hiding the dirt, it doesn't mean it isn't there. I'd much rather vac and sweep and see the dust balls disappear than vac a carpet and leave the dirt there.

Another pro with years of potential messy children ahead of you - I think you're less inclined to leave things lying around on a hard floor, piles of clothes and the like when H gets to her teenage years. I don't know why or if it's just me but it doesn't seem right to leave things on a hard floor whereas I leave stuff everywhere on carpet.

Re: Pros and cons of hard floors in bedrooms

We've got sanded wooden floors on two floors and I've not noticed any cons compared to the carpet that we took up. In decorating terms it's far easier to change decor On saturday nigh one of the cats was sick on the new cream carpet on the top floor and it has a pain to wipe up and get the buts out plus it's left a stain. The wooden floors are much easier to clear of sick though.
I've not noticed that the wood is cold or noisy at all

Re: Pros and cons of hard floors in bedrooms

Chell, I agree that it's not too cold or noisy if it's fitted properly with the correct underlay (ok it is if you clack over it with heels on but DH only wears heels for work )

I totally agree with those who say it's easier to clear sick from than carpet. I'd only have a light coloured carpet and that = stain tastic.

And it's not just sick with kids, is it? Wee, poo now, then drinks, make up etc etc to come in the future

I don't think it matters how much you spend on a carpet, it still stains (well it does in our house anyway - I don't seem to be able to get stains out of carpets. Or at my last house, if you managed to get the stain out, the berluddy carpet would be bleached )

But the two biggest cons for carpet as far as I can see have got to be hygiene - it's so so so much easier to clean a hard floor with a good hoover for the dust.

And I think the biggest winner is the allergy argument in this house. I'm v atopic and it's v hereditary so I wouldn't be surprised if the children are either.

Thank you girls - I'll keep on at him and see if I can chip away slowly (if I find out it's cheaper that of course may be a massive tick in it's favour!)
