    Do you "need" a microwave?

I am just redesigning my kitchen and I need a new microwave as mine is on the way out. I actually really don't want to put one in my kitchen as there won't be space for a high level and I don't want one sitting on the worktop so was toying with not having one at all or just having one stuck out in the utility for the small occassion when I may need one.

I rarely use it now except for baby milk or warming baby food - would I really miss it massively if I didn't have one? What do people use theirs for?

I use mine just for warming milk or reheating my dinner. Occasionally use it for a quick way to cook veggies but not often.

If you rarely use yours I think sticking it in the utility would be a really good idea. Ours sits nicely on top of our fridge but I know I would be really annoyed to have to loose work space because of it.

Mostly defrosting batch cooked food as I always forget to take things out the freezer the night before.

And heating up my hot chocolate.

We have one but don't use it that often. I do use it to defrost stuff sometimes or reheat things but it is probably only used about once a week.

Warming milk, cooking peas... that's about it really. I don't think we'd miss it much if it went, but it's in the corner of the worktop, so doesn't take up any 'usable' space.

Oh yes I guess I use it to defrost things occassionally, probably only once or twice a month though. Utility room it is then!

I have mine on a dead but of workspace but before I had the kitchen done I kept it in the larder as I hardly used it and I didn't really miss it. As you say, just for occasional defrosting and chocolate melting.

Re: Do you "need" a microwave?

I am a recent convert to microwaves (I bought my first one in January when we started to have no kitchen). I mainly use mine for defrosting and cooking baked potatoes. I find this such a novelty that I'm having baked p's about 5 nights a week at the moment. It's going in a corner in our new kitchen on a work top. But, if I get fed up of it, it can go on top of the washing machine in the downstairs loo.
